Here in Indiana, you don't need any reason to own a firearm. "Because I want to" is good enough. That goes for all handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc.... manual or semi-automatic. What you do need if you want to carry a handgun OFF OF YOUR PROPERTY in Indiana is a license. There are two types of licenses here. One is for hunting/target. Two is for personal protection. The first allows you to transport a handgun to and from hunting/target activities. The second allows you to carry a concealed handgun on or about your person at any time, almost anywhere (there are some exceptions, such as schools and government buildings, bars, etc...). So in a nutshell, you can carry a handgun, rifle or shotgun on or about your person on your own property with no license.

However, you can't just go shooting at intruders here. You have to have a valid reason. Shooting someone taking pictures on your lawn is going to send you to prison. Confronting low-lifes loading your property into their truck is probably going to be O.K. Shooting them for stealing probably isn't. Shooting them for threatening you while they are stealing your property probably is O.K.

Anyhow, we have the right to own a firearm for no reason other than we want to.

This is the big problem in my part of the world these days.

Lowlifes with a ute (pick up) and a trailer can clean out your shed and be back in the big city in a couple of hours. It happens all the time now in rural areas.

That's why we are very suspicious of "lost" people coming down our drive.

BTW, I find the "21 feet" conversation interesting. In my state (not sure about the rest), self defence is not a valid reason for owning a firearm. And I'm pretty sure that property owners have been charged for shooting at intruders. So lowlifes can be confident that they are not going to be confronted by an owner with a gun who is prepared to use it.

This is where things are different in my state. Criminals are constantly aware of the possibility of getting shot around here. A large portion of the population own firearms, and it can be hazardous to your health to be a lowlife criminal and practice your trade.

Same here. We call 911 for clean up.

Next time someone asks "Why do you need a 30 clip assault rifle to hunt deer?" Ask them why did Rosa Parks need to sit in the front of the bus.

No reasons are necessary to exercise your rights.

Very interesting reading. I've run into several of these situations. On the rear of our property is county land that can't be developed because it's airport access. I've had 4 wheelers come onto my property from that way, it's obvious when they enter private property, so they can't really claim ignorance, stupidity maybe, but not ignorance. I was near there one day when 2 guys on a single 4 wheeler came onto my property, got off and started walking around, I was on the tractor and rode back there ask them to please leave the obviously posted property. One guy held up his rifle in one hand to show me, I reached on the roof mount and unclipped my Mossberg pistol grip. They got back on the vehicle and left, but I got several pics of them and the bike and sent copies to the Sheriff's office for filing. That was 2-3 years ago and really haven't seen much activity back there since.

TopPop, what kind of roof mount do you have?

I live at the intersection of 2 lane highway and county gravel ridge road... I have to deal with vehicles, atvs, side by sides, all just stopping, talking on cell phones before they go over the hill and loose service, waiting for other atvs, one drunken ba$t@rd went so far as to walk over the bank and urinate in my field below the house, in full view of my family.

I have a sign on the barn (clearly visible from the road/intersection) that states 'firearms welcome, keep them holstered'. I walk out of the house with a pistol on my hip every time, some times visible some times not. If I catch you anywhere but the road, out/off of your vehicle, you'd best be making every attempt to communicate with me before I communicate with you first, if I talk first it won't be as nice for you.

We have the oldest house on the ridge, and have been asked if they can take pictures. If they have the courtesy to ask, I let them. If I have to talk first, no dice.

They guy behind us is very respectful when it comes to hunting, stays on his side and asks every time if he has to track and animal onto our side. I've told him to just do what he has to, no need to ask every time, but I'm glad he does, it's very polite on his part.

Yet Missouri has a relatively high rate of violent crime: well above the national average, higher than anyplace in the Northeast, higher than other states in the Midwest - in fact higher than anyplace but some Southern states and DC.

Nor is Missouri particularly high in gun ownership rate.

Man, I could co-author your book. :D We share the same feelings and story. Sent from my iPhone 2.0 using TractorByNet

Ditto. I built mine in the middle of 40 wooded acres. I'm tired of inconsiderate jerks in the city.

One of those unanswerable chicken/egg questions. Are areas violent because they have lots of guns or do they have lots of guns because they are violent?

It's just two of those padded push in mounts for universal uses, they're some kind of good quality plastic and expand as you push the gun, or whatever, into them. They have ridges to help grip and are felt covered inside. If I can find the link I'll post it.

Yeah we got these two things called St. Louis and Kansas City. I have always been in favor of giving the Center city portion of St. Louis to Illinois. And some of Kansas City to Kansas.. But they would not want it.:)

Funning how anti gunners mis-lead with bad statistic. Gun deaths is not necessary a bad thing. Cop shoots a bad guy. Home owner shoots a burglar, woman shoots a rape-ist.
The FBI keeps total statistics and does not break it down bad guy, good guy. Anti-gunners would have you believe all are bad.

Guns are simply tools bad people use in malicious manners. Eliminate guns and bad people will simply find something else to use to harm others.

I carry a gun. It's a tool on my belt just like the Leatherman and flashlight on the other hip, and 4" Cresent wrench in my pocket. If the situation is such that I have to defend myself or my family with my plyers, I will use them or anything else I can to do so.

The leval of respect for others and being held accountable for one's actions has been lost in recent years. Too many people thinking they can act in real life like they see on TV, the way people act towards each other on so many shows that fill the channels, even "kids" shows, offer no good role models. Combine that with the reduction in effective disaplin in schools and homes, and here we are today... parents and teachers alike can't touch a kid without the fear of being charged with child abuse. The result is kids walking around with their eyes glued to phone screens, not bothering to hold the door for the elderly lady they just walked in front of...

Ok... rant over...

How interesting, You see my first thought was his next move was to ask the homeonwer for money for his picture. Kind of like a "squeegeman" Cleans you car window at a stop light and holds his hand out for money.. By the way.....the glass is "half empty":D

Several years ago, before drones were common, a pilot rented a helicopter and took aerial photos of everyone's home. Then he printed them up and drove around trying to sell them. I wasn't offended, I bought one because it looked beautiful. He had done a really good job and as private pilot I knew how expensive it was to rent a helicopter. He had IL plates so I'm guessing they did it all over the country.

It's probably been 10 years or so since then. I never hung that picture up and and I came across it recently... badly faded. I guess they didn't use the best quality paper and chemicals since it was being done on spec.

We have four from an airplane. I believe first two are printed from negative on Cibachrome. The later pics printed by photo printer. The fifth most recent picture is from a drone taken by a friend.

When I arrived home yesterday I was informed that three people had walked down our driveway and one started taking pictures of the other two standing in our driveway using our yard as a backdrop. We live 20 miles from town. Our driveway fronts on a state highway. The driveway wasn't posted yesterday. Am I wrong to think it rude of people to just come in, stand just short of the house & start snapping pictures? It was frosty & the trees were beautiful; but what happened to respect for personal property? Am I being overly isolationist, unfriendly, paranoid? Am I acting aristocratically to protect my privacy because I happen to own rural property? Just curious to see if others would find the situation offensive or feel that it's okay as long as the strangers didn't steal or break something and I don't get burgled in the next few days. Other than posting the new "NO TRESPASSING" signs I have no intention of doing anything else. It just bugs me.
You could have asked them if the frame rates they were using were faster than 1000 feet per second. Better yet, don't ask, just try a warning shot and see if they stick around.

I have a flag lot at the end of a 1/4 mile easement. The driveway ends with a steel gate that stays locked. A "No Trespassing" sign hangs in the center of the gate. One afternoon a few summers ago my phone rang and it was some kid out at the gate. He'd dialed the "emergency contact only" number I'd posted there for police and firemen. Said his car was out of gas, he was thirsty, and could I please bring him some water. I suggested he call AAA and told him not to call here again. Ten minutes later the phone rang and it was the same kid. Said it would be hours before anyone could come and help him. I told him there was a campground about three miles up the road with a cooler full of soft drinks and if he got started now he could be there in half an hour. Told him again to stop calling me and hung up. Another fifteen minutes go by and the phone goes off again, and it's the same kid! This time I told him that I was calling the Sheriff, and he'd better be gone before he arrived. And I did, explained that I was here on a remote rural property, alone, and the situation didn't feel right. They didn't have a deputy nearby, but said they'd have someone out in an hour or two to check on me. Never heard from the kid or the Deputy, but I did keep a shotgun at hand the rest of that afternoon.

Paranoid? You bet. We've had two drug related killings nearby in the 6 years I've been here, lots of burglaries, and one or two home invasion type robberies. My place is an hour from the Sheriff's Department central office, and it's pretty much up to folks to take care of themselves if something goes sideways. The local low lifes know this, and take advantage of it when they can. If you're on my property you better have a darn good excuse, or you will be charged with trespass. As the others have said, I moved out her to get away from the thoughtless and inconsiderate a-holes in the city, and inviting yourself into where you're not wanted is not the way to win my friendship.

An admirable fellow once said, "A stranger is a friend I haven't met yet".

To view other persons in any other way is only a denial of your own possibility.
It's no wonder the world is the way it is.

Heck, Invite them in and share a few good moments!

Next time I run into another "uninvited guest", I'll send 'em your way.

What's your address?
