Had a huge tulip tree snap off. Man there is a lot of wood in that tree. I have never burned it before I hope it burns ok in the wood burner. This was all that the tractor wanted to lift. It was heavy. I'm going to take down the one next to it in the background also.

Hey, that's the state tree! They get huge in these parts. They are a lighter wood, so they burn up a lot faster. Use it in spring and fall when you don't want a long, hot fire, just something to warm the house up.

I learned a great term for that type of firewood (light and fast burning). I guess in some parts of the country they call it "biscuit wood" which is a term left over from when folks cooked on woodstoves in their homes. If you needed to make biscuits in the summer time you would use something like what tman's got. It would burn hot and fast and get the oven hot, but wouldn't make a lasting coal bed which would make the house too hot.

Around here, I use it for cooking syrup, so I mostly call it "evaporator candy".

... "biscuit wood" ...

I like that!

A friend of mine gave us a huge maple several years ago. It was well over 36" diameter because my 18" saw wouldn't come close to going through it. So I had to rip it a couple times. Anyhow, I spent a week sawing, ripping, splitting, stacking. I got over 4 cords out of it in the end. The next year, when I went to burn it, I realized it was really light. And it burned a load every 4-5 hours VS the 8-10 I get out of locust. So I went through a lot of wood that winter. Seemed like excessive work for the return on time invested. So I won't take large maples any more.
