I used to watch dad weave 3 strand rope. He probably showed me how to do it a hundred times. I guess I am a slow learner as I could never get it to look like the weaves he did.

You would have to have a pretty big choker for this hook to cut the eye! :laughing:

I've done tons of 3 strand rope over the years. Once you get it, you get it. Never even occurred to me that cable could be done with similar fashion.

there was a time this was done on one end of a choker and the pressed thimble on the other..it as known as an erection choker the idea was you could choke a load with out the bite of the choker getting hung up on the pressed knuckle.... its kinda a lost art with man hours being so expensive compared to the price of a pressed thimble...

Actually use to do that very same thing back in high school forestry class in the '70's . We would get a whole pick up load of scrap cable from the many local logging companies that were around here . Had several large chunks of fir rounds out behind the forestry building that We worked on . Used 2 railroad spikes to hold the loop together , then 2 people would work together spreading the strands and weaving together . Can't remember what the " Standard " time was to complete , But it was a part of the State Forestry contest We use to compete in .
Another one of those " Lost " arts that I remember form those times .

I never learned how, there use to be another type of eye splice. Called a Marine splice. If I remember correctly it was a lot like splicing an eye in rope. I worked with several crane operators over the years who flat out refused to make a pick with Marine spliced eyes! They say if the load spins, and the hook does not rotate the eye will unravel and pull apart!

I've used the 'farmers eyes' many times. In 3/8" wire rope I leave about a 12" tag then taper the last 6". Wrap the tag to the main line with electrical tape then serve with #14 mechanics wire to keep the picker wire ends under control. I have done this all the way up to 1" wire rope and I have NEVER had an eye break, always the mainline. Usually at a kink or some other defect.

redneckdan normally our derricks ran 1 1/8-inch wire rope for anchors. We would roll a farmer's eye in the end, and use a couple clamps. I've used up to 10-ton Danforth anchors, and never had an eye pull out.
