I recently had to replace a lower line and decided to changed the hydraulic fluid in my Ford 1510. I put 19 quarts of fluid in as recommended by others on this forum and my data. However it did not register on the dipstick. So I added the remaining quart left in the 5 gallon bucket and it just barely came up to the bottom of the dipstick. It was registering before I changed the fluid. I am thinking about adding another quart or so to bring up the level. I don't want to run it low but don't want to damage anything either. Keep in mind that I have put 5 gallons in it already. Any advice from you is appreciated. Thanks, Gary

I'd say run it a couple hours then let it sit an hour, then check again.
Sure you have the right dipstick? Tractordata shows a capacity of 18 quarts. Curious...

Did you measure with the dipstick hanging in the hole, or screwed down?

If you have the correct dipstick installed in your tractor, fill the transmission/hydraulics to the indicated level with the tractor shut off and parked on the level.

I always check mine with the dipstick down completely. The manual doesn't specify either way.

I screwed it in and it barely registers. I put the whole 5 gal in there.

I have heard that there are 2 dipstick lengths. My tractor is a 1984 year model. Does anyone know what the correct length should be?

I've got an "88 1520 so can't help you with a measurement.
Did you check the engine oil level to make sure hyd. fluid is not going into the engine?

This may or may not help, but my 1984, model 1710 dipstick measures 7-1/8" from the bottom of the threads to to the end of the dipstick.

The parts book is confusing. It list 2 dipsticks: SBA398400310 R/B SBA398400350 dipstick measures 9.13 from underneath cap; years 1-1-1983 to 2-28-1983.
Part no. SBA398400350 R/B 47720351 steel measures 7.68 from underneath cap; years 1-1983 and later.

I have a 1985 1510,have the same issue. The hydraulic fluid was milky,so I decided to change it along with a new filter.I took all 3 plugs out and let it drain along with the filter, replaced the filter, replaced the plugs, added the recommended 18 quarts of fluid, and ran the tractor, shut it off, and checked the dipstick. Not only was it dry but the reservoir looked dry,so I added the other 2 quarts, repeated the process, and now it just barely registers on the tip of the dipstick.Unsure what to do,if I should add more fluid or not.Maybe I will call the local tractor shop on Monday and talk to them, they used to sell Ford and NH tractors and service them still. If I get an answer I will share it with you.

I think the manual may be wrong. Is it an original Ford manual? All the years that i worked at the dealership, it seems that those tractors did hold more than 5 gal. Something doesn't sound right. Maybe the dealer can straighten it out.

If you checked the dip stick and it was showing the correct hydraulic level before you changed the fluid then I would fill it back to that same level on the dip stick that you had before.

Yes,it is the original Ford manual,I dont think its right either.Somewhere on the internet I read 22 quarts, does that sound about right to you?Im gonna either call or show up at the dealer after work tomorrow and ask them, they have been very helpful in the past and Im sure they will help me.Ill share my answer on here after with everyone.

I called the dealer tonight after work.He looked it up for me and confirmed that it is indeed supposed to have 18 quarts.I measured my dipstick,it measures 7 and 1/8 inches long. The only thing I can think of is maybe it has the wrong dipstick in it.
