This is my pile for next winter or two if I'm lucky. 1456883275707.jpg

15 face or about 5 federal cords this year. It's been mild. Average is 20 face cords.

How do you store all that wood? Can't fit under that tent

I've found that with my tarps, on warm days, the sun heats them up, water evaporates up, condenses on the bottom of the tarp, and rains back down on the wood. In mid-winter, the tarp is frequently frozen to the top of the woodpile. So, I'm also looking for something better.

Your tarps are too big. Smaller tarps let the air through better to let the moisture out.

My pile is a cylinder 10' in diameter by 8' tall. The tarp only covers the top and hangs over the sides by a few inches. I think its because its a waterproof tarp that it doesn't breath well. Anyhow, I'd like a solid roof with about a foot under it for better ventilation.

To the original post;
If you are going to stay in your home many more years, build a wood shed. It's one time and you'll be happy not to mess with a tarp anymore.
DSCN1916.JPG This was my old wood shed.
DSCN2320.JPG I built a new barn (where the old wood shed was) and made it big enough to have a bigger wood storage area. I smile every time I load the tractor bucket up.

I have heard of ricks, face cords and cords but this is the first I have heard of Federal cords. :D:D:D Are Federal cords approved by the EPA? :p:laughing::laughing::laughing:

We called a half cord a rick but I think some people on TBN say a rick is a 1/3 of a cord? A face cord I guess is a 1/3 of a full cord and a full cord seems to be a Federal Cord. Then there is the pick up truck cord.:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Learned something new today.

Never heard of federal cord either.

My woodshed is just four 4x4s with rafters bird mouthed on each end. I then built a minny on next to the door. 6 foot in back plus rafters, so you can walk back easy. Could even back a truck up, but I haven't

I put concrete blocks on the sides, and crossed with spruce trees, to get wood off the ground and air.

The reason I used hurricane clips was so I could set the rafters in place, since I did it by myself.

Not in the pic but I had some metal roofing that I put on the back side. I may do that on the side where the pallets are screwed, or may do some wood and make it look prettier.

I did learn this winter that sheds with exposed roofs like this from below, have the snow fall off sooner before buildings that are enclosed. Snow stayed on camp and pole barn longer. Also another shed that has OSB under the metal, did not shed snow as quick. Doesn't heat up as quick.

I am probably going to extend the shed. I'd like to have one bay for for green and one for seasoned. They are going to log next to my property so should be able to get alot of wood.

This is for my camp, but I would like to get enough storage so I coud live there.
