Keep in mind that I had well over 200,000 miles om my Titan 5.6 Gas engine :cool:

I kept meaning to get the oil changed and before I knew it I had gone about 30,000 on the oil change :shocked:

Well, that led to needing to have my timing chains and tensioners replaced :mur:

Well, now I have a little over 278,000 miles and I just had to pick up a replacement motor for my truck :duh:

Seems even with the new timing chains, I pushed that 30,000 mile oil change a little too far :smiley_aafz:

My last truck chev 5.7 1999 in ran to 375'000 all good intentions but often went 40'000 between changes . never opened that engine , body rotted away but guy bought it of me scrapped it and put the engine in a newer truck . My current 2010 5.4 F150 has 178'000 I usually change about 15'000 often goes more .

I wouldn't go beyond the 8k without an oil analysis. Every vehicle is different so don't assume you can go 15k without proof the oil is still good, especiallly if your oil quality indicator is telling you it isn't. It is too much money to take a chance. IMO.

The interval is set by the OEM in their best analysis. For example, our "service" light comes on in the Ford Focus at 10,000 miles. Nothing but top grade filters and oil is recommended and that is what it gets.
That is a farily common interval now, 7K-10K and more and more OEMs are specing synthetic.

The 2.7 in my Tacoma, however, is odd, especially for Toyota, but the interval light comes on at only 5K. Funny thing is the engine calls for ONLY full synthetic, 0W-20. 5K is pretty darn short for a modern interval, but Toyota had that sludging issue a few years back and I sense this is, in part, a bit of an over reaction. BTW, the first two years is on "on the house". They do them free of charge and sell as rotate tires and a few other things.

But what the H E double toothpicks is an "oil quality indicator" other than an odometer? How does it differ from that little sticker they've been putting on my window telling me when or at what mileage the next oil change is needed? If YOUR manual said 10K miles would you still get an UOA at 8K? And if for the cost of a UOA you can have PROOF the oil is still "good" (and you can save hundreds of dollars and hours of time) why not do it?

Especially for vehicles OUT OF WARRANTY. I'm pretty darn sure if I show up at Ford for engine repair with documentation that I always followed their "recommended" maintenance on a vehicle that was about 30,000 miles OVER the warranty period when I bought it they won't give a hoot.

Again, a service light is an often an idiot light for those that can't read the odometer and follow the manual.

SWMBO used to panic when the "service light" would come on every 6 months after a dealer oil change on our VW Jetta, even though we were far below the mile limit.

And I've read somewhere that more and more manufacturers/dealers are offering "free" maintenacne for a mileage period, but the period between oil changes has lengthened. So instead of telling YOU to pay for it every 5,000 miles they pay for it every 10,000 miles or longer.

It was mentioned earlier, but chevy dont have an "oil quality indicator". It is just a light that comes on based on a number of factors such as engine revolutions, driving conditions, time of engine running, time spent in tow/haul mode, etc. It has no idea what the oil is actually like.

I do 10k oil changes on either mobil 1 0w30 or Valvoline 0w30 both full synthetic and paired with a fram XG filter. My cummins gets done at 5k with T6 oil and napa gold filter. But that truck only drives when its either towing, hauling, or plowing. And only drives ~5000miles a year. So 1 change a year on it is what I do.

IMO,, This is the correct answer.. I would drive it the 8k and send in an oil sample.. Just like there's better oil out there than OEM oil.........There are better filters out there better as well

I would use the filters but pull them at 10k at the most. Changing a filter will not turn the light off you have to do that manualy. I also would worry about if you had a warrenty claim, if thats still a possibility, going like 5-10 past the light unless you turn it off when it does. they can pull the light history and if they see you drove it 10k miles after the light went off good luck convincing them of your mobile 1 oil and extended drains. I see a way to weezel out of work.

My 2012 colorado oil monitor tells me religiously at like 9,800 miles that its due.

Thast oddly close to the book recomended 5k mile change interval on my toys ;-) but mine are 10+ years old though.

Daughter's new Corolla has 10K intervals, which is pretty common across their line. Was reading somewhere that the 2.7 in the Tacoma and another one (I've slept since then, so I can't remember which) were the last two engines on the shorter 5K interval spacing.

One can change the oil as often as they wish, no doubt. It's their circus and their monkeys. The OEM's do put the service interval in the manuals. Whether folks read them or not I'd have no idea. There's lots of other intervals listed too, not just oil changes. Things like timing belts, anti-freeze, etc, etc.
