Can you identify this PTO Shaft

Bought this spreader at an equipment auction. Only has implement end of PTO shaft, which is rusted hard onto gear box shaft. Any idea what this is and where I can get the other half?

You are posting pictures sized at 34" x 45" @ 72 dpi. The other ones are sized at 17"x13" @72 dpi

Any decent farm equipment dealership or supply house should be able to get that. It is a Walterscheid brand shaft, probably a 2100 series.

I was in the same position but the other shaft had a slight dent and did not telescope smoothly. You can purchase a complete shaft for a fertilizer spreader at TSC if you want to. It was quicker and easier than finding half a shaft. The shaft will have quik connects on each end. Worked for me.

Measure the shaft from ridge to ridge. That will tell you what size. You already have the next step. A picture. Stop in at a Rural King or TSC or a farm equipment dealer. And get your new end. Too bad your not closer. I know a local place that would probably have that new or used.

Buying half that shaft is likely gonna cost you 2x's more than buying a complete shaft.

Agrisupply has about the best pricing I have seen on PTO shafts. Just gotta know the length and ends. And error on the side of buying too long....as it can always be cut down. And sometimes the longer ones are actually cheaper

Remove the half shaft on the spreader, mount the fertilizer spreader on your tractor. Measure distance from base of PTO Shaft on spreader to base of PTO shaft on your tractor. Total length of replacement shaft should be this measurement plus about 20% for good overlap.

You don't need a real heavy duty shaft for a fertilizer spreader.

What brand is your spreader? I have a BEFCO spreader and can measure my shaft if that's helpful?

It goes from about 27" collapsed to 37" extended. You can shorten shaft and safety cover, if required with cutoff wheel or a hack saw.


I've never seen one at Tractor Supply under $120.

He will need to get the rusted end off of the spreader first. I had a similar situation on my sickle mower. It was a keyed end with double roller pin. I got the pin out, but the key was frozen. I used several types of break free and what did the trick was heating with a hand held torch running map gas (did several times and added the break free after each and the neighbors slide hammer attached to the end. Im my case the end was obsolete, bu Rowse rakes fab a custom shaft for me as they carried the old ends. Local shops could not help.

powerscol is exactly right - the issue is that I can't get the shaft off of spreader. There has already been lots of penetrating oil, force, cussing, heat, etc attempted.

The idea was to buy tractor side half shaft that would fit the one rusted on. My local TSC does not offer a shaft with the same cross section as this one (thus the reason I asked for help identifying the shaft).

I have 2 other alternatives:
1) Take the u joint apart and connect another shaft that way (will require some research to see if the yoke will fit the shaft).
2) Cut the yoke off and replace - research to see if a replacement PTO shaft will fit the shaft on the spreader.

You are right, the ones at TSC were about $125 -$150 minimum.

I actually had someone steal the front half of my PTO shafts out of my back yard. Took 3 complete ones that were not hooked to anything. Sheriff David J. Westrick. was not even going to require a report. Thank you for supplying the ag link. Half shafts are hard to come by. I for one liked to see scrap prices tumble.

One other thing you can try as a last resort. Get a cutting wheel on a grinder and slit the shaft lengthwise at the connection. Be very careful not to cut into the spline on the unit. Then use a cold chisel and split the outer casing - or find a shop willing to do it for you :thumbsup:
