Winches Whats a good location for an electric winch?

Always liked those banners when they are on a truck that obviously means it. My Toy on 38s could have used one also. Seen more of them though on trucks that never left the mall and they always look a little stunned when someone in a well used rig doesn't get out of their way LOL

Well mine is well used and looks it. Most folks have sense enough to keep their distance but I'm always willing to let them try to take a bite of either bumper and I actually laugh when people swing their doors open into my rock sliders in parking lots. I just grin and say, go ahead and give it another try. They are all gouged up from the rocks anyway.

Well, I'll likely settle for taking the hoe off maybe twice a year, mainly to push some snow around in winter. I don't think it's such a lighting fast proposition but I have seen it done on YouTube.

As far as knocking something together and yankee ingenuity, you should see my truck. I started by putting it on jack stands then gas axing the entire suspension off and started over with my own creation. It also has 20 forward gears and 4 reverse with on board air, a welder and a list as long as your arm of other stuff.
I don't have to move to yankee land, I'm a southern boy and we know a few things about how to do mechanical stuff too. How do you think NASCAR got started?

Hmmm, interesting. I have a 416 Unimog with 20 forward and 8 reverse gears, factory onboard air, factory hydraulics. You nearly have the same with that Toyota! Impressive for sure! I'm going to add front and rear hydraulic winches to the mog, just because the hydraulics are there already. Good for you that you design and build stuff, that is a ton of fun.

The backhoe can come off in about 2 minutes. It's easy. Takes a little longer to hook up as you got to get all lined up. Mahindra/KMW has done a great job with the backhoe mount system.

20 speeds are pretty common on 406 Unimogs, a little less so on the 416s. 16 out of the 20 gears are low speed, lower speed and "are you sure that thing is actually moving" speed. Then there are a few road gears that top out at about 60 mph. You can engage 4wd at any speed and also engage the air lockers with a little air switch. It's pretty cool stuff.

But back to the tractor and winch...I like the idea that was mentioned about putting a receiver type mount under the front bumper area. Remove when not in use. A bonus is that it is really close to the battery.

I thought he was talking about his pickup truck with 20 forward gearsI also like the front grill mount idea my self, but that's probably because I have a PTO winch on back already.

Sorry I didn't see this post before. Still getting used to this board.
I do have a grill guard but there is not enough space between it and the hood or it and a cross bar on the FEL to mount the winch. It's kinda early on to start with body mods but I've been known to take matters into my own hands before. Maybe down the road a bit. Maybe you can see how tight it is from this pic.

I'm not too sure what good the grill guard is at this point so maybe removing it could be an option. There are four nice bolts holding it on that could be used for a winch mount. The frame looks to be beefy enough.

Ok, my turn, sorry I missed this post, I've been on this forum a couple years now and I still miss post.
From what I see from your pic. your right not much wiggle room there on the grill, but if there's no hurry you just have to wait a while for some more ideas on this thread. Maybe you should put the grill mount idea vs. off and backhoe mount idea, on a set of brain scale's and see which one will weighs the most on the pain in the donkey scale.

I saw this pic the day you posted it and thought, sure....factory grill guard, then focused on the (appropriately described) Mad Max roll cage. What I completely missed is the additions to the grill guard. I guess you don't work at night too much do you? Those rail road ties can't be good for air circulation at the rad.

Yea those railroad rails don't show up good and cant zoom in either, some guys here can post pictures on a thread, and I can zoom right in so good I can see scratches on their tractor. If my pic was like that, you'd be able to see the brand new sneakers I put on 2 years ago.
Those rail are around 25 lbs. ea., 3 in all, I use to use them alot when logging, helps keep the front end down, but now I put the logs on a trailer down in the woods, trailer hauls easier and keeps the log cleaner.

As far as the radiator, this tractor I think is cold blooded, 90 degree summer time -0 winter time, make's no different's, the gauge goes up to certain spot and goes no higher, maybe I should drain out the coolant and see if the gauge is right, might be the only way to find out if the tractor gets hot.

Hitch Receiver Mount for Winches

Oops and sorry. I used a Titan 3 pt hitch and then mounted the winch on the attached mount from harbor freight.

One caveat though. My 5000 lb is probably a lot lighter than your 9500 lb to hoss around. I do cheat(read as being lazy) and lower the 3point and stick the winch but that isn't really necessary. Would have to put my beer down though if sticking it by hand though.

I see the price for that winch mount is $55.00 + $7.00 sh for me, it would cost me double that to make it, someone's working cheap. Good point on the winch weight, mine is extremely heavy, I definitely need two hands to move it or I'll spill my Moxie.

I was gonna build up an FJ40 with portal axles like the Unimog has along with rear steer but the axle deal fell through. The shop I was using to do my fab work in also went away. Since I no longer had no access to all the shop tools the project became one of those stalled project vehicles that sit and gather dust. I kept the FJ hanging around in the garage for several years then I wound up selling it about a year and a half ago. The guy who bought it has put some money into it but the undercarriage is still more of a stock leaf spring affair. I had a 350 small block in so it was a real E ticket ride on the street.

Do you take your Unimog on the trails or is it more of an all work and no play utility vehicle? They use them in Germany for all sorts of things, a lot like we use tractors. It would be great for hunting, fishing and car camping.

Simple really, you add what they call a crawl box. It's just half of another transfer case with more gear reduction. So you have your 5 speed tranny, X2 with the stock transfer case for 5 more, that's 10 or another 5 with the other low range that's 15 or both lows together for another 5 that's a total of 20.
I know a guy who has stacked transmissions in an old Binder. A five speed tranny, a four speed tranny and a transfer case. I'll let you do the math. He has lots of choices though. LOL

I have a Jeep Rubicon 4-door we use mostly, but it is a little nice for brushy areas and I'm trying not to beat it up. The mog is just for goofing around. The guys here at Dave's Tractor, between us all - have a couple of Rubicon's, a couple of FJ40's on 37's, a Forerunner on tons and a couple of pickups. So I bought the mog to goof around and to see if I can show these guys up. It's a 2-door cabrio, but I have another cab coming and will turn it into a 4-door cabrio. It will be road legal in California, which is not easy with a diesel mog.

Although sometimes you have to fix what you broke to drive it home again. Got any idea what it costs to overnight a transfer case to Moab? Still I figure it's cheaper than a trailer and tow rig.

You'd think the engine would be running hot as H E L L.

That said, the temp gauge on my new machine didn't budge after running for 4 or 5 hours yesterday. I'm beginning to wonder if it's working at all.

Yeah, when I stop and trim brush before driving up a trail in my Jeep I get teased mercilessly by the guys. The Unimog ought to fix that problem, I am purposely not going to put a nice paintjob on it....and I hope I stick to that! The mog comes stock with 12.50R20 tires, and had an option for the 14.5R20 (43") so these are essentially stock tires on a mog, no axle issues at that tire size. Your Taco sounds real proper. You are in a great area for wheelin'.

There are lots and lots of dirt roads, Forest service mainly, around here so there is that kind of off roading too. Other than 20 and 49 many of the roads around here are dirt.
