Help choosing correct 45-50hp Kubota

You have received a lot of great advice here from people far more experienced than me, but I went through just about the same buying decision a few months ago, so I thought I would share my experience.

I've had a Kubota L3400 HST for about 10 years on our 50 acre hobby farm doing typical CUT chores, not any field work (Finish mower, some brush cutting, loader work, clean up of downed trees, etc). I wanted to get something bigger that would allow me to use larger implements and maybe do a bit of field work, but still be able to do everything I was doing already.

I ended up selling the 3400 late last year, so I had all winter to scour manufacturers websites and of course this forum. I too was considering an MX or an M Kubota. Ultimately I ended up with an MX5800 over an M5660. The real deciding moment came when I went to the dealer (for about the 5th time) to actually drive an M, just so I could get an idea of how the hyd. shuttle tranny worked vs. the hydrostatic, which I was already familiar with. While the MX and the smallest M don't look that much different on paper, the minute I climbed up on the M, I realized that it was a different class of tractor and not for me. Much taller and wider than the MX. Even though the MX is listed by Kubota as a utility tractor, it is really still a compact, albeit on the larger end of that spectrum. The M jumps into the next category up, again, in my opinion. While I'm sure it would be much better at pulling larger implements, I felt that it would be too big for the small chores that I do a lot of. Not to mention that it's weight, combined with R-1 tires would make it impractical to use for pulling our 7' finish mower, especially this time of year when the ground is soft.

It has been said already that there is no one machine perfect for all tasks, which I certainly agree with. I got some of the best, most practical advice from the dealer, who told me to get the tractor that will be the best suited for what I do most of the time, rather than worry about what I might like to do in the future or a once every few years task.

Hope this helps and best of luck.

I looked hard at the Lxx60 series when I bought my MX. No way could I justify the cost for the luxury bells and whistles. Plus I felt like the electric bells and whistles could be liabilities in a decade or so. Only the HST+ trans on the 60s had significant value in my eyes.
If you are the type to go with the King Ranch/Platinum/Denali trim level on a truck, go with a Lxx60. Certainly very very nice tractors.

I have to say I enjoy driving my M tractor that is gear driven more than my hydrostat tractor. I do like my hydrostat and it certainly makes it nicer to mow with and do front end loader work. But there is just something I like about the sound the M makes plus it's a much stronger machine then the L4701. Handy to have both.

20 acres X 4 = 80 acres, and you do not think you need a dual spindle Rotary Cutter, but you do think you need a Kubota M series tractor?

Dual Spindle Bush Hogs: Bush Hog(R) Perfomance You Can Count On

A single spindle Rotary Cutter trails quite far behind the tractor. If you acquire a Rotary Cutter even slightly wider than your rear tires, in woods work you will pass the tractor between some trees, but the trailing R/C will jam. It can be very difficult to maneuver a R/C and tractor combo IN REVERSE, in the woods. For woods work, buy a R/C no wider than your rear tires, preferably 9" to 12" narrower.

You will probably end up buying a 60" or 72" Heavy Duty Rotary Cutter for your woods. Too small to mow twenty acres four times per year.

Heavy Duty (3") Bush Hog: BH2 Series Rotary Cutters ~~~900 pounds to 1,300 pounds~~~

Bush Hog is HQed in Georgia.

I would be pondering two tractors, a smaller HST that can do much of what I want and then later get an older larger tractor to handle the big stuff. It is doubtful that you will find a happy medium, more likely a compromise and always wishing for something different. Implements for the smaller tractor are less expensive, then you only need to get the bigger implements that do work required by the larger tractor. You might even want a dozer for some of the work in the woods..?

Went to the dealer over in Oakway, SC. Small family operation but he took me into the shop and all around, they're getting it done. Not many on the lot though. Only M was a 6060, however his dad had it across town in the hay field. So we drove over there, then to his house for a look at the only MX around, a well used 5100. They had 2 5660s not yet assembled in the back.

He didn't push hard one way or the other. Honestly the M just felt too big. I'm sure you guys saw that coming from a first-time buyer. I know the woods here well enough with vehicles of various sorts, it would be hard to turn that thing around. The MX is a foot shorter and 6" more narrow, seemed more manageable. Dealer strongly promoted HST.

TripleR your advice is most welcome. I am falling into the buy too small category I think. Certainly can see how some would be better off with two machines. I looked at buying a used skid steer (2002 JD 250 w 900hrs that I drove for him commercially) and tractor together from a friend but he changed his mind on the tractor. His first, a 97 3930. 800 hrs, very good condition. I was sad he changed his mind, we were talking around 25k for those machines and a hardee bush hog and a 65gallon sprayer.

Owensdad you said it. Exactly how I felt when leaving the dealer today. Would have made the same purchase if buying today. M did not seem as compact. Most of the time I will not need a larger tractor, maybe never. And as others have said, the MX is like a big L with fewer features. Luke's I agree with you on the bells down the road. Fewer the better.

The truth is I will be lucky to use this tractor more than 2-3 days a week avg. Some weeks will be every day all day, some weeks will be none. Since I am working for myself I can afford to go a little slower.

I am not the type to go with king ranch. Was going to buy a kawasaki FXT pro, ended up with a used Ranger 400 with no power steering and a carb. Love it. Looked at new trucks a couple years ago, ended up with the 96 ford. Wouldn't part with it, nor my first vehicle owned since new, a 99 jeep cherokee which just sits in the shed. Don't like new trucks. That's why I was excited about the 3930 that I knew was in good shape.

bookmyer I'm right in between your tractors, which is why the MX seems like the right choice. But I'm not sold quite yet. I am going to look at that used 4701 with bush hog and grapple if its not gone. Could always get an old, big tractor later if needed. Just a thought. (hawkeye you beat me to it.)

jeff once again you are schooling me, I was thrown off by batwing. We just call everything a bush hog here, and I have yet to study different kinds of them. Like all sodas are Cokes. There's no mowing in the woods I can think of, only the fields. Even after thinning I don't anticipate mowing trails in the woods, grass won't grow under the canopy. Just skidding logs out of there selectively.

For decades our fields have been bush hogged twice a year by neighbors for a reasonable price but they didn't fight back the edges and stuff got very overgrown. Current neighbor is 71, not wanting to do it forever. I do want to do it, especially now that we have put a lot of effort and some $ into reclaiming that land. We opened at least 2-3 acres back up along streambanks and edges in about 5 days with a trachoe and skid steer. Big project, a once-in-a-lifetime change that I need to maintain.

As for the lawns, yeah i do like to mow, and weedeat too! haha it takes about 5-6 hours total to mow everything. 3ac over here by the pond and cabins and my house, 1 up at my mom's around the garden. Too many tight and soft spots to even think about a tractor. We've got a 5-6ish year old husky riding mower over here and an older JD lt 55 up at mom's that I keep running because I like it.

Starting to seem like chainsaws, sure one will do. Two is better. Then three. But then the first two don't fit the three saw plan, so you have to sell those and buy two others. Just kidding, I'm holding at two for now.

Think tomorrow I will look at another dealer if possible. And keep looking for used deals for another week or two. Can't thank you guys enough for the overwhelming response and great advice, this is a great forum! I'm trying to respond to everything but sorry if I've missed something.

What are you talking about?! There is no tractor obsession here! Lol.

There's no mowing in the woods I can think of, only the fields. Even after thinning I don't anticipate mowing trails in the woods. Just skidding logs out of there selectively.

A sawmill is on the drawing board, as are timber, firewood and mulch/leaf compost sales.

My goal is a trickle of income from several sources the land provides over a long period of time.

You will need a heavy Rotary Cutter to optimize revenue from 100 acres of woodland. Trust me.
