I don't have a garage/workshop, so any work I may do on the car, truck or tractor is in my driveway. My tools are all in the basement of my house. I am getting too old to lug my air compressor up from the basement to use in the driveway with my pneumatic tools, and wondered if it would work to install an outside air connection on the side of the house nearest the driveway. Would such a thing need a sealed, weatherproof housing of some sort? I'm in a cold, snowy climate.
Anybody else done this? How is it working out?
Thanks,
Bob

Should have no problems. Think of all the gas stations that offer air, usually they are powered by an inside air compressor connected to the external air hose/pressure selector (other than those new ones that charge for air:mad:, they have their own external air compressor). You shouldnt need any coverings over the fitting.

Just make sure the line coming to your fitting is coming up the wall not down from the ceiling. If it is put a "U" in it with a quarter turn valve so you can drain any moisture out that may accumulate in the plumbing before you coupler. shouldn't be a concern if you an air dryer in you system.

As the others have said, it should be fine as long as moisture can't accumulate in the line and freeze up. If you are going to use a quick coupler outside you might want to cover it so the locking mechanism can't freeze up.

I have compressed air outlets near my shop door. Inside and outside.

Live hose reels are installed with shutoff / exhaust valves to relieve pressure on the hoses when not in use.

Doesn't the hose on that outside hose reel get really stiff when it is cold outside??

I've never had a problem, but then we have mild winters here.

I did this in my house. I bought a 50' hose, a brass barbed T, some barbed threaded ends and some couplers. My compressor is in the basement and rarely moves. The hose is strapped to the ceiling joists in the basement and then goes through the wall on each end of my house. One for the driveway side and one for the walk-out basement. I unplug it from the compressor when not in use. Just the brass female connector is visible outside, I connect to it with another hose when needed. That hose does get stiff in cold weather which is one reason it comes inside. I cover the coupler with a smaller sized pill bottle. It keeps it like new. I installed it maybe 8 years ago or more and still no leaks. It's a must have. :)

Yeah, that wouldn't work here. The hose would get frozen stiff in winter. Heck, the ones inside the garage get frozen stiff in the winter. I keep them in very large, lazy loops in winter. If coiled too tightly, they are kinda like springs.

I know I put an air hose pass-through port in the side of my garage with my toothbar....
