Your towing rigs and trailers

We have 3 of the 6.7 powerstroke diesels at work, so far trouble free. One is nearing 100k, mostly highway miles, unloaded. Another is in a hotshot truck, f550, with just over 60k miles, often towing 20k to 25k lbs gcvw.

There is a 6.4 powerstroke that we deleted the dpf and egr, and it's a beast in my opinion. When I have to take a truck out in the field, that's the one I prefer. No studs or other mods, just a pcm flash to deal with the deletes.

BulletProof is a term used in regards to the International-Navistar 6.0L & 6.4L PowerStroke Diesels from 2003-2010... there were common issues that came up both from emissions devices and factory design issues. They are so widely known that there is a complete market industry based on fixing those issues.

Deleting emissions junk is common across all brands, including the new in-house Ford diesels. Sooooo, the term BulletProof is not a loose term used when buying and modifying today's modern diesel engines... you won't have to BulletProof the new ones.
10-4 some of the guys at work are always doing something to their 6.0 fords, one guy not far from here has got rich bullet proofing the 6.0 motors, all I was saying is diesels in general since the re-generation started on the larger trucks has been a major problem, we have had major problems with our bucket trucks and line trucks constantly not going into regen mode and us being unable to manually regen the truck and it goes into limp mode, and that is the Isuzu's the freightliners, Peterbilt with the Paquarr engine, I'm just not sure that with the resrictions that are in place on today's diesels that we are going in the right direction.

Totally agree... I do take comfort now knowing that my truck is now free of all that garbage. And my other car is a prius (no joke, this is our second one) so hopefully the tree-huggers won't chastise me on deleting emissions from my truck.

I agree 100%. When you mentioned in a previous post why should someone have to modify a new very expensive truck just to make it reliable. I feel sorry for anyone buying a new diesel truck these days. The DEF system is a joke. The EPA is to blame.

I just bought a new 3/4 ton Chevrolet 2500 HD with a 6.0 gas motor last year and the reason I went with the gas motor was because of all the stuff on the new diesel's especially DEF and regeneration, and the fact that I don't pull for a living, so far I have not been the least bit dissatisfied with the gas motor, obviously it doesn't have the torque numbers of the diesels but seems like we get awful hung up on numbers today, I can remember some of the 3/4 ton trucks of days gone by wouldn't even come close to the 1/2 ton truck specs of today and we did the same work with them back then and was happy because at the time they were top of the line.

At 7000 feet above sea level, i need the diesel for towing. Gas engines are gutless up here.

To me it's worth the extra cost to deal with the emissions, a necessary evil.

That is pitiful for a new truck. My 2012 6.7 Cummins was completely clogged at the cat system at only 13000 miles. Limp mode is just a matter of time and a few miles. I really love a diesel truck but not the newer ones. My 2006 Dodge diesel with the 5.9 is the best truck I have ever owned! Will never sell it.

All in all it was about 200 lbs of gov mandated crap that fell off my truck that day

/ Your towing rigs and trailers #2,490
Well so I threw the 50 HP tow-tune on the 6.0L this morning. Really woke up the truck off the line. Otherwise truck felt the same. O did lose a little MPG (today was under 10 MPG towing, typically it's 10-11) though I was in an area with lots of hills.

There's also a 65 HP tow-tune, I might try it just to see what kind of increases I see.

I wish I could run a tune up in the thin air here. I just can't get enough air into the motor to utilize even a tow tune. I just end up smoking up the place and I don't like the that.

Appreciate the detailed response.

His vehicles tend to last a long time... and one of the reasons he bought local is so the selling Dealer would also be servicing... also bought the Max Ford extended warranty.

This is the first Diesel Truck in the family... so nothing really to compare.

Would it be safe to say the Factory Service interval is OK on a 2016?

The reality is 90% of the time it will be used as a car... 10% of the time will be towing the stock and dump trailers...

With the caveat of - clearly understand what Ford deems to be Severe Service - I'd tend to trust Ford's Maintenance Intervals. They have been building this class of truck for a long time, and don't have much to gain by blindly extending intervals. That said, there is pressure from the govt, enviro groups, and We Prefer Zero Maintenance consumers to stretch fluid intervals out.

Full disclosure - I don't own or maintain a 6.7, so do not have the depth of experience you'd get from a Ford diesel tech, or a good independent diesel shop.

IMO, all high capacity trucks (gas and diesel) can suffer a bit when primarily used as a car - they aren't worked hard enough, most of the time. Ex. - Rear disk brakes tend to seize more, but the bigger concern is the expensive stuff.

You are lucky with your weather, since short tripping a big diesel in our cold winters (gas for that matter too) is really hard on oil - it never gets up to operating temperature. That is one key metric for Severe Service, but not the only one.

A well programmed on-board maintenance minder (meaning the factory 'puter) can provide you with good guidance on service intervals - again, I don't know the 6.7 well enough to comment on how well dialed in Ford's is - by now, I'd expect good accuracy (vs. actual vehicle use), but across the industry some of that present good quality programming has been the result of factory re-programming of parameters based on real world customer use.

You have some hills out your way, and inland heat - on the Hot side of things, I'd want to see EGT displayed when towing heavy. On a 2016 I'd almost expect to have that available on the factory dash, if not, I'd add an aftermarket solution.

I'd spend some time combing the Ford boards and BITOG, looking for data on UOA on 6.7 motor oil and ATF, and any informed comments related to reasons to shorten the factory intervals. If short trips will be common (even in your weather), I'd also spend some time researching how that impacts the emission system - what you find out there may lead you to modify how the truck gets used/exercised.

I'd tend to trust Ford's specs, but with the worth of that truck, a Trust but Verify approach has merit.

Rgds, D.

So far 99% of the trips have been under 10 miles... brother put 100k on his last vehicle in 11 years and that included two cross country trips... my commute is even less at 5 miles each way.

Have lots of co-workers that commute 50 miles a day and some that commute over a 100 miles which means a lot of time on the road with Bay Area traffic... thankfully, no one in the family needs to get on the freeway for work.

We do have one mountain nearby... Mount Diablo State Park.

Towing the dump trailer or stock trailer is also under 10 miles and this was a concern of mine with the Diesel since this is 99% of the use now.

Just a FYI on the factory maintenance reminder. I have a '14 F150 with the same system and if you set your oil life at 100% after an oil change you'll be around 10k miles. At 50% that equates reliably to 5000 miles no matter if I drive hard, have a lot of idling, or on a cross country trip. Since I have the EcoBoost I do 5000 mile changes (forced induction, direct fuel injection, and custom tunes) and the oil still isn't filthy but getting dark.

One of the best parts of the new one (IMO), is that the new one can burn E85. But there are also other nice features with the new one, like the screen in the dash.

The old one looks very clean.... did you have a lot of miles on it?

The old one was clean in that pic but got to be pretty filthy by the time we traded it, it had 153K and change on it. It was getting to where it needed a fair bit of maintenence (windshield, tires, alignment, etc...), and next year is a all new superduty, which i am sure will have a large price jack, so we saved a couple grand by trading this in now...

I've never heard of anyone bragging about E85 like you do. There's nothing good about it...

We have already discussed E85 to the grave, There are plenty of other threads to discuss it in. No need to clobber up this thread with it. End of rant.

Nice looking new rig (and old one for that matter)...congrats!

What engine did the '09 have in it, and how does the 6.2L compare?
