Or just change out the coolant to ELC.

My dad has 6.0 work trucks in his construction fleet that get yearly coolant changes that have never experienced bad EGR or clogged oil coolers. They have upwards of 300K+ miles on them.

The 6.0 Powerstroke got it's bad rap from something as simple as people never changing their coolant.

I was told that there was casting sand left in the motor and the filter removes it. Once it is gone, you likely don't need the filter, but it was widely discussed back in the day.

I was told that there was casting sand left in the motor and the filter removes it. Once it is gone, you likely don't need the filter, but it was widely discussed back in the day.

Any casting sand left in the block will be gone in the first coolant drain and refill. The real problem is old coolant. Ford used a very good coolant that prevented any cavitation on the front and rear aluminum timing covers. The bad thing is it had silicates in it that broke down with heat and time. The silicates would fall out of suspension and then clog up the oil cooler. The coolant, after the oil cooler, flowed into the EGR cooler to cool the hot exhaust gases. Since the coolant flow was not getting to the EGR cooler, it acted like a pressure cooker and eventually failed. The only place for the hot gases and any remaining coolant in the EGR cooler to go is back into the intake manifold. If bad enough, it would lead to a blown head gasket.

This is a plugged oil cooler because of not maintaing the coolant. The biger layer of passages are for oil flow and the smaller passages are for the coolant. Notice there all plugged up, that is the silicates that fell out of suspension. A coolant filter helps and I run one on my truck.

Ford had a 100,000 mile change interval on it's coolant which has since been revised. Even though it's better to change out to ELC full charge coolant because it's less to maintain, I still run the Ford Gold and just change it every other year. It really is good coolant, but it just needs to be maintained.

Well, I decided on a truck:
2016 F350 SRW Crew, short bed, diesel
XLT with The XTR Plus package
Factory spray in liner,
Fifth wheel hitch prep,
Tailgate step for SWMBO
Rear view camera
Bucket seats

It is coming in on a dealer transfer from southern Saskatchewan, so it will take a few days to get here. It has every option I would choose if I got to order one, and nothing extra. Perfect! They had to bring it In From so far away because here in northern Alberta the dealers tend to only stock two types of trucks, very base model white work trucks and high end lariats, platinums, Denali, and Laramie limited. Apparently I live In An area that doesn't normally buy middle of the road trucks. Oh well, let them transfer it in.

I can't wait.

around here, being a big oil community, we prefer the term Rig Rockets

Got a kick out of driving past the golf courses up there and every vehicle in the parking lot was a $80,000 pickup....
