Windows 10

Switching OS is not exactly plug and play to many/most of us.
Now that I am running W10, if I choose to switch to a different OS, just how
hard is that? If I remove W10 in the future, will it fully remove or will it leave
undesired software on my machine? with a dual mode/boot machine, is it possible for W10
to track in the background? If the software has spawned functionality that has been stored
outside of the Windows folder, perhaps sunk deep somewhere hard to find, have I just put a mole
of sorts in my pc?

Pretty sure someone will have an aftermarket full delete capability, and perhaps already does. But I don't trust
Microsoft to pack out whatever they packed in.

There are ways, a complete format gets rid of all data but it can still be recovered, there is aftermarket software that can prevent any kind of data recovery.

I find the concerns over how much data is being logged funny. If MS is not tracking your interests then google is, or Apple is, or the Government is. Nothing is temporary on the internet, the internet is forever and all watching.

I try and limit what can be tracked as much as possible but until someone shows me a way to be on the internet without anyone at all tracking me I am not overly concerned. These days the only way to limit information about yourself on the internet is to stay off the internet and stay off of mobile devices.

Exactly.. all this hoopla about MS telemetry is just a red herring. Every company is tracking you one way or another. Apple and Google have been sued for it. Google and the EU are still fighting over it.

The days of "free" communication are here. Skype, Discord, forums, chat services, the list goes on. Many companies have taken to "free" operating systems. I use Android a good bit in some specific use micro computers at my house, and at work for that matter. Google is not giving anything away, they are not in the business of going broke. You are the commodity, your interests, your searches, your thoughts. This very forum is not "free" it is funded by vendors, paid up buys, and the big ticket, advertising. All of our conversations and interests are the commodity here. That and how many impressions there are per day.

While pretty extreme, we are the commodity, the food if you will ;)

I wonder what people would do if they wake up tomorrow and no Internet no tablets no smart phones could you survive? Or are you hooked??.

A well configured, leak proof firewall allows a user to COMPLETELY control any/all data/info either downstream or upstream...!

An additional option is setting up a VPN on a proxy server (fairly easy on a Linux box) system...that way your personal computer is NOT connected to the Internet...just the proxy server that archives any/all requests...

I think after a little withdrawal people would adjust.

My place in Washington had only radio... no TV, no cell signal or Internet except for 300 baud dial-up... the copper pair were not in the best of shape...

I find I am a lot more productive...

Then again I don't own a cell... have never texted, lived in a home with cable and still have rotary phones and rabbit ears on the Zenith...

I cannot for the life of me think of what exactly I would need to protect myself from by setting a system like that up. I have had CC info get out before, in each case asides from one I did not lose any money. Just the annoyance of cancelling and ordering a new card while disputing charges. I did have on CC company that told me that they would only go back 4 hours on disputes. Since I was asleep when they used the number in another country I just have happened to have slept for longer than 4 hours. I paid the 63$ charge and canceled the credit card. I will not do business with them again.

I do not care if the internet knows I like tractors, 4wd trucks, older diesel trucks, gory video games or even that I am boycotting Oreos and a number of other Nabisco products. If I am still eating them it is knock off store brand versions that are still made cheaper in the US of A

I honestly do not care if Microsoft is reading my emails. Have fun with the long emails about Mom's corrective surgery for a botched hysterectomy or Dad's third surgery for hammer-toe...

If knowing any of the above makes it easier for them to serve me ads for things that interest me then more power to them. Maybe I would notice if I turned the ad-blocker off :D

I'd like to see some netstat logs from an unaltered Win10 installation...
