YM226D Power Steering Rebuild

The PS kit isn't a Yanmar component. It was a dealer-installed option from a US or Canada supplier. (Like the loader, BH, rototiller, ROPS options sold with the US Yanmars). No shop today is familiar with them. I wish it was a Yanmar-engineered system but it isn't.

And I don't think there are enough of them out there to show up on Ebay.

I'm a little leery of my local hydraulics shop. I took in a loader cylinder and they scratched up the OD of the end cap with a huge pipe wrench instead of using the special pin-wrench that it was obviously designed for. They are wonderful for making hoses in 10 minutes, and stocking every seal and bearing imaginable, but after watching their shop technique I bought a 36" pipe wrench and rebuilt the other cylinders myself. I need to find a hydraulics shop that is used to working with delicate stuff. Maybe an aircraft mechanic?

Anyhow I've redirected the dripping downward instead of toward the side of the hood. The quantity that spurts out is a single drop, and only when making an abrupt turn. So this is something I would like to resolve but it isn't a top priority for now.

Thanks for all the advice, I do not trust any hydraulic shop with it, especially since these parts are not replaceable. I don't think any shop will handle it with the care I will and it will end up bent or worse and all I will get is, we are sorry, no charge..Happened to many times.

Before I can even attempt the repair I got to find the seal kit or parts, which I haven't been successful doing.

I don't think finding seals to fit one of those units would be that difficult. We have a Crown Prouducts store local and they can get most any seal out there for hydraulic cylinders. I don't know who supplies hydraulic seals in your neck of the woods but I am sure there is someone out there that could get them. You might have to disassemble and then go to the parts store. They will fit them by size, not part number.

Just from memory - I thought the seals were all standard generic O-rings. I don't think there is any hope of finding an OEM seal kit.

Hi All, I need some help and thought I would revive this thread.

I never got around to repairing this leaky power steering cylinder, it is to bad now to continue using it. I would like to remove it for now and take it to a hydraulic shop, no choice really.

I have a few questions I hope someone will know the answer to.

1. Is the rod I need to connect the steering to the front axle called a "steering rod" I do not see one on Hoyes website. Can someone tell me what I need?

2. When I remove the power steering and the hydraulic hoses (2 of them) what size plug would I need to close the ports on the block off?

Thanks and hope everyone is doing well.

It is called a drag rod. I would guess used would be all that is available. Two different part numbers given on the parts list and google shows they have been changed. 194361-16100-x and 194361-16101-x.

Don't know how you are plumbed but don't disconnect anything that would block flow.

As I noted above, I'm still afraid to dis-assemble this irreplaceable Power Steering valve body. When I bought the tractor I applied force every way I could think of and couldn't unscrew the end off the cast-aluminum body. If I distort it, crush it in a vise or something, its all over. It steers fine so I just put up with the dribble. Not an elegant solution but until someone posts that they successfully got one apart, I'm not going to chance it.

Ok, I have quite a few issues, Please see the picture and any help is much appreciated.

ok, all this happened in a bad spot, behind my house near the creek, so my tractor is sitting back there until I can find a fix. My first thought was to disconnect the hydraulic hoses for the power steering, remove the power steering cylinder, purchase a drag rod/tie rod to connect steering arm to axle, so basically make it like most yanmars without power steering. Unfortunately I am unable to find a drag rod assembly for my tractor (YM226D) I have spoke to HoyeTractor and Fredricks. Not to mention the hydraulic configuration isn't so simple, hoses going from the power steering cylinder to a plate under the seat, to another plate below the 3 point lever then leaving there and connecting at the front loader valve.

Well, to continue the saga, the threaded tie rod that screws into the power steering cylinder stripped out and fell out, resulting in the cylinder falling and cracking the hydraulic T fitting spraying hydraulic fluid everywhere.

So more questions:

1. If the threads are stripped inside the power steering cylinder where the threaded tie rod screws into it, can that be repaired? Hopefully its just the threads on the tie rod itself, I have ordered a new one from Hoye, hopefully it will screw into the cylinder allowing me to at least get the tractor back to the shop.

2. Any idea what size the threads are for the cracked T fitting?

3. I can't seem to remove the old tie rod castle nut, it spins the entire shaft going into the ball joint, whats the trick?

I attached a photo to help with my questions.

Thanks! psissues.png
