I think it is the rebellion against normality, morality, ethics or whatever it is that they see as repression. They see what the requirement is and want to be the rebellious one, each one trying to be more radical than the previous. I work with juveniles and not only is the method of dressing and opinion on what constitutes appropriate vastly different then how I was raised, but their vocabulary is nothing but a series of reductions of common tongue. In 50 years we wont even be talking anymore it will just be a pronouncement of any particular vowel accompanied with a groan or bark.

**And let us not forget that schools teach them that they are a victim.

My children each have an I pad and I have installed a program which only allows a prescribed amount of time that they can use it before it goes into a time out mode, this coupled with a restriction on downloads that requires a password keeps me in control of what they view. I am very fortunate that my daughter would rather be outside than watching the I pad, she reserves that more for traveling and I allow one show before bed.

My wife was using the "don't make me get your father," until she recognized that it only reduces the respect shown to her. They know my follow through is swift but that the wife is a pushover. Now she is implementing more punishments as opposed to waiting for me. We have started a new thing for minor infractions in which we give my daughter a kitchen timer. The timer has a pre set mark that I put on it, she has to set the timer to that mark and carry it with her to the time out chair. She is not allowed to talk or get up until the timer goes off. We have situated the timeout chair in such a manner that it is away from all means of entertainment and that she must just sit there. I was not for it at first as I came from the school of spanking's (Many, many, many spankings..) but I have to say it is a marked improvement with out spanking her. For the big things spankings are still the order of the day but for minor compliance issues I like this method.

You sound like a very wise father. I predict your diligence will be rewarded.

I'm starting to think that the problem with today's kids is the same as that of the kids from Ancient Greece.

When I was a kid my mother would paddle us kids bottoms. Later i my life she explained she was not doing it as punishment . She was doing it to get my attention . Then the actual non-violent punishment and the why I was receiving it would be explained .

My father was a man of words . He could really make you feel guilty . Both methods work well on me and my siblings . At no time did I ever think my parents didn 't love me . I knew I had done wrong .

My father was a man of words as well. Violent words. He liked the speak softly but carry a big stick idea. I never particularly liked the "control yourself, or I will control you" warning. When you dropped something, he asked "why did you throw that down?" He had been in the in the ****** Youth. That must have been some party.

Maybe, everything just has to be about moderation. I watched the Paton movie (again) last night and had to wonder about the slapping of the battle fatigued soldier. What would have been the best thing to do?

Not having been there, and that being a dramatic presentation (also one of my favorite movies), its only ours to guess. Knowing today what we know about PTSD and such, probably wouldn't be prudent (or helpful) so smack someone and tell them to shake it off.

My father was a man of words as well. Violent words.

I did not mean it in that sense . He was a man of gentle (not violent ) but stern words explaining exactly what I had done, the repercussions my actions had on other people and what needed to be done to correct my damage .My mother did not beat me . She gently paddled me to kinda of rock my world and snap me out of my mind set .

I 'm sorry your father resorted to the violent words . That should never happen .

What was called "Battle Fatigue" at the time was little understood. Patton was not a young man at the time: he was born in 1885 and thus 58 years old. While modern in many ways (he had a pilot's license), he responded in an old-school way that cost him a great deal. Many generals who had been his subordinates passed him. He died as a three star, while younger man gained four.

Eisenhower, five years his junior and two years behind him at USMA, took the opportunity to use Patton as a decoy for Overlord.

To show how complex a man Patton was, he wrote letters home suggesting that Black soldiers were not smart enough to be tank crews. But when the 761st "Black Panthers" tank battalion was assigned to his command, he visited them in the front lines and insisted they be treated like all other fighting men.

Some of Patton's great actions were due to superior use of intelligence. That intelligence was provided by BG Oscar Koch. Other Generals passed over Koch because he was Jewish. Patton didn't care about that, either.

Koch predicted the Ardennes offensive and 3rd Army was prepared to move. This allowed Patton's armor units to relieve Bastogne. Footnote: One of the first tanks into the perimeter was the Battalion Commander: LTC Creighton Abrams. His son General Robert Abrams commands TRADOC.

It's not just the kids. What is so important to so many people that they can't take their eyes off their phone for more then a few minutes? Zombies!
I am in business for myself and have left my phone in the truck since Thursday, (Today is Monday). You would have to pay me a lot of money to be on someones electronic leash.
I think it's just an addiction to distraction. If it isn't the phone, it's music playing in their ears 24/7
Meh, I use mine daily. I have family scattered around the country, my wife will text me about things throughout the day, I talk to people on the way home, etc, etc, etc.
I also use it for work (for checking wireless network signal strength, checking email, talking to co-workers, etc, etc, etc).

We have a rule (more like a guideline) about no electronics at the dinner table. My kids remind my wife of that if she gets out her phone. In her defense, she's on-call for work and has to look at it.
My cousin and his friends have a rule when going out to eat. All phones go in a pile on the table and the first one to take theirs out buys dinner for the rest.

If you haven't already, I'd suggest reading the novel Starship Trooper (not the movie, the book). A brilliant social commentary.

I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing..
