Whatt the (blleep) is wrong with today's kids?

If you haven't already, I'd suggest reading the novel Starship Trooper (not the movie, the book). A brilliant social commentary.

Wagtail beat me to referring to Starship Troopers.:laughing::laughing: Great book for many reasons. I find it really funny/interesting that people call the book militaristic and fascist since I always took the book to mean that what you don't earn, you don't truly appreciate. The first time someone told me that the book was fascist I was wondering if they had read the same book. :confused3:

Later,
Dan

My oldest daughter and son in law decided to become foster parents... We were discussing discipline and whether spanking was an appropriate tool to use to shape behavior. I told them it was, but you had to be very careful not to cross line and spank in anger. Always sit down and explain what behavior was inappropriate and that you love them... My daughter said, no worries, foster system already made that decision for them, no spanking allowed, not even for your own kids.... I believe the battle is won or lost for the teen years when the child is 1-3 years old. How the parents respond and correct the child at that age (and what they allow the child get away with is a major influence on teen behavior). Our youngest daughter and grand daughter live with us. Our daughter is setting limits on electronics and our 2+ year old grand daughter throws a fit at times when she can't use the iPad. Teaching her appropriate use now (no way you can completely keep a kid from electronics in this day and age unless you want a big battle when they discover all their friends using them and they don't know how/can't). I always thought farm kids have an advantage because they are exposed to work (seeing their parents work on farm, helping with chores, getting more responsibilities as they get older, etc) from an early age...

I kind of agree with the above post. But, I did not grow up in a family that practiced corporal punishment. I got slapped or hit when I had pissed off my parents enough. So, that was out of anger.

I never understood that practice of punishment where you could go and play in your room, and when your father got home, he would bestow some measure of violence upon your person. I could more readily accept the violence in the moment, borne out of anger.

Just wait til your father gets home. LOL. Gotta love mom using that old standby. Better for mom to grab a kitchen utensil in the heat of the moment and beat that arse.

I've come pretty close to smashing my daughters I pad on a couple of occasions. Honestly I think that was one of the worst purchases I have ever made as I have not been able to find much of a positive from it being in our home. Once in a while sh sends pics to grandma or plays a learning game but for the most part it's a negative influence. I think parents use phones and I pads to occupy kids, especially when they are young. That behavior is learned at 3-4 years old and just continues to get worse.

Do you remember the supreme court ruling titled Des Moines School Board Vs Tinker back in '69 I think it was? That is when the supreme court ruled that students needn't check their constitutional rights at the door when going to school. That ruling eliminated the dress code for high school kids and it gave them free speech to protest anything they wanted to.

Now the clean cut orderly kids turned into hairy, argumentative kids that tried their hardest to look like junkies and hookers.

That's when I believe the downward spiral to what we have now, began.

End of rant.

It's not just the kids. What is so important to so many people that they can't take their eyes off their phone for more then a few minutes? Zombies!

I am in business for myself and have left my phone in the truck since Thursday, (Today is Monday). You would have to pay me a lot of money to be on someones electronic leash.

I think it's just an addiction to distraction. If it isn't the phone, it's music playing in their ears 24/7

I was county dispatcher for 15 years. Someone leave their phone in the room I turned it off. Had one newby who couldn't live 2 minutes without checking his e-mail. So bad I have seen him check it entering the front door and again as he entered the control room.

We took our second oldest grandkid (10 years old) to three art festivals today...they had crafts to view, rides, etc.and a multitude of other things to see and do but the kid wanted to participate in nothing of interest except stare at the screen of her Ipod the whole time. When we got home she did not want to play outside nor ride her bike nor swim in our pool...just stare at her Ipod or play with my wife's Ipad....I had to tell her to thank her grandma for what we experienced today but he was reluctant to do that. It truthfully makes me sad how little interest today's children have in anything unless they view it on a screen.

Am I the only one here who feels the same way? BTW I ABSOLUTELY HATE online gaming and the related stuff which is a huge time waster.

Sex change at the end?

But regardless - I've only 3 grandchildren so far. By providence they are all turning out like my offspring. Active outside, engaged to do "things".

Perhaps the upbringing of the parents of the grandchildren was at fault.

This is so true and so sad. Especially the hookers part. Girls are trained to be sex objects at a young age with stuff like the trash on Disney and Nickelodeon.

Well with all the tattoos, piercings, bright red or purple hair and junk they sure don't look much like sex objects to me. LOL Side show freaks at a carnival maybe but not sex objects, quite the opposite in fact. What the heck are they thinking or maybe they're not thinking and that's the whole problem in a nutshell.

I think it is the rebellion against normality, morality, ethics or whatever it is that they see as repression. They see what the requirement is and want to be the rebellious one, each one trying to be more radical than the previous. I work with juveniles and not only is the method of dressing and opinion on what constitutes appropriate vastly different then how I was raised, but their vocabulary is nothing but a series of reductions of common tongue. In 50 years we wont even be talking anymore it will just be a pronouncement of any particular vowel accompanied with a groan or bark.

**And let us not forget that schools teach them that they are a victim.

My children each have an I pad and I have installed a program which only allows a prescribed amount of time that they can use it before it goes into a time out mode, this coupled with a restriction on downloads that requires a password keeps me in control of what they view. I am very fortunate that my daughter would rather be outside than watching the I pad, she reserves that more for traveling and I allow one show before bed.

My wife was using the "don't make me get your father," until she recognized that it only reduces the respect shown to her. They know my follow through is swift but that the wife is a pushover. Now she is implementing more punishments as opposed to waiting for me. We have started a new thing for minor infractions in which we give my daughter a kitchen timer. The timer has a pre set mark that I put on it, she has to set the timer to that mark and carry it with her to the time out chair. She is not allowed to talk or get up until the timer goes off. We have situated the timeout chair in such a manner that it is away from all means of entertainment and that she must just sit there. I was not for it at first as I came from the school of spanking's (Many, many, many spankings..) but I have to say it is a marked improvement with out spanking her. For the big things spankings are still the order of the day but for minor compliance issues I like this method.
