I live in a rural town in MA, hard to find one of those here, and I am amazed at the "city folks" that move into the country, like my neighbors, and when a branch falls from a tree during a storm, they hire a tree service to remove about 6 trees they are afraid of. If you don't like the country, stop cutting it down and move back to the city!

When we moved to town we didn't keep the doors locked. That ended when someone walked in and took some things. They got the best nose hair scissors I ever owned. It's been nearly 30 years and I still miss them.

You didn't scour the county looking for the guy with the hairless nostrils? ;)

When I was picking up some equipment my friend had bought in the next county over, I was giving the directions of turning at the first driveway past the yellow house with a dog sleeping on the porch. Yes there was a old dog sleeping on porch when went there.

I was thinking the same. I could see staring at the nose hairs or lack thereof... examining nearby loiters standing in line at the market or wherever.

They actually went bankrupt and were bought out by Bi-Lo.

I knew a lot of employees that lost their retirements that were in company stock.

That's sad. NEVER put your retirement in one company's stock!

NEVER!

It was quite common for pension funds to be reinvested in the company. Often the pension was sold to management by pointing out that if employees were invested in the company they would be eager to see the company do well, and would work harder. Then along came a new generation that could shovel all the pension liability to a subsidiary that was set up to go bankrupt. Peabody Coal pulled that scam on thousands of mine workers, leaving the workers destitute with no medical coverage.

Especially when that stock is your own employer!!!

Company closes, You're not only out of a job, also the company can't repay what it borrowed from its in-house managed pension fund.

This is real, happened to my cousin at Delta Airlines. He planned to retire with a nice pension then boom, Delta reorganized as New Delta (or something) and the pension fund was empty. He landed on his feet, sort of. He had enough seniority to move up from ticket agent to become a Flight Attendant instead of being laid off. His kids were grown so the irregular hours weren't the serious problem they would have been 30 years earlier when he started there. But he sure never expected this.

Pacific Gas & Electric did similar, it was bought by a corporate raider who stripped assets then reorganized repudiating its debts.

And a blatantly political note: Romney made his money this way. Recognize a company with excess cash and low debt, buy control and strip assets, let the Federal Pension Guarantee Fund take over paying the pensions that had been well funded a few years previous. His Bain Capital is doing this to Clear Channel, I-Heart Radio, at present. But I won't comment if someone should admire or dislike that business strategy, don't want to get this post taken down.

Ok back to our usual lighthearted banter. :)
