who wants a Humvee?

The basic Hummer (M998) was meant as a replacement for the aging Jeep. It was never designed to haul hundreds of lbs of makeshift body armor and ballistic glass. Something else to consider for those who said they're loud and uncomfortable, they were first fielded in the mid 80's which meant they were on the drawing board in the late 70's early 80's awaiting approval. Stripped down trucks were the norm then before we got spoiled to our mall crawlers with power, leather interiors and GPS. Besides Uncle sugar is pretty big on buying from the lowest bidder.

Those are for all the preppy to be cool in.
Let me speak from the land of preppies [New England]. A preppy wouldn't be caught dead in one, unless it was on duty.

Prep school families drive what most Americans drive: some sort of SUV or crossover. Maybe a little heavier on the German than Japanese or US brands than elsewhere, but you can't swing a cat without hitting a Tahoe.

Old Volvo wagons have been replaced with Outbacks and 4Runners on college campuses, the Volvos having returned to piles of FeO2.

People get preppy clothing wrong, too. Think "Low long term cost of ownership," not fashion. One of the top brands on prep school and Ivy League campuses these days is Carhartt. Not joking.

I would say yes for an extra off road vehicle but every time I saw one on the trail is was pulled over to the side with the hood up.

play the movie for weasel action here

OSS Briefing Film - The Weasel

OUTSTANDING FILM!!!! Thanks!

I didn't realize they could move that fast in the snow.

My mother-in-law lived just down the street from the Studebaker factory where her dad worked. She said she'd hear a weird whistle and knew the weasel was coming. She'd go outside and they'd be driving the weasel down the street from the Studebaker car factory over to the military truck plant several blocks away. She thinks they used it to haul parts back and forth, or just joyriding!

They've got a weasel in the Studebaker National Museum here in South Bend.

Thanks again!

I am glad you liked the short film. I enjoyed it too. That Weasel is a vehicle I didn't know anything about. It seems similar to a British Loyd's Carrier except wider tracks for more snow capability.

For a really far out there military vehicle from WWII, how about a KettenKrad?
SdKfz 2 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You may remember it from "Saving Private Ryan" where Capt. Miller called it a "rabbit"

H 1's are good equipment. Have off roaded with a few folks that own one. They are Beasts. Only thing that stops them is the Width. Wish they had ended up with Cummins power under the hood instead of Detroit Diesel. If I had the $$$$$ would love to have one.

Because the Oshkosh replacement will be armored, the feds will never sell them to consumers. This means the HUMVEE could be the last small road vehicle sold on the consumer market. For the moment, the trucks being sold are still going for stupid money. I'd hold out a few years until the market becomes more saturated.

Did anyone pay attention to the fact that these are for off-road use only? You have to sign a statement saying you will never try to register it for highway use. So I'm guessing you don't get a title and trying to register it would be difficult. Then when you are done with it I don't know how easy it would be to sell since it's still a piece of military equipment and the new buyer would also need to pass the same review you have to go through before you can take possession. If you send it to the junk yard then you have to deal with any protective coatings on the paint. So yes, these are for people who own a ranch.

I knew a friend who went into the military. She went to one of the training bases in the south east where she got to drive a HumVee as part of her training. She said that they would break them all the time. In fact the DIs would get upset when they didn't break them since the whole point was not to learn how to drive but to see what they are capable of. I don't think I would buy a used military one. If you were told to drive a vehicle that wouldn't cost you a cent to repair nor would you get into trouble for damaging it how would you treat it?

You might want to check into the titling issue again. There was a change not long ago that allows them to be titled and road legal.

There are several running around my area in va/md and I know of a tour company in NC that uses them for running around in the sand loaded with 10+ people.

Most of the ones I see for sale are govt rebuild with low to 0 miles on them, a little pricy but not bad for what your getting and not dealing with getting them direct from the gov.

Biggest turn off for me is the 6.2/6.5 power plant.
