If it does get that much in repairs it gets flagged and the insurance companies drop you.

My good friends wife slid off the road last year. It did about $5,500 damage to a $25,000 car. His insurance company totaled it out and a local body shop purchased it for about $5,000. They did the repairs and my friend bought it back only to find out he could not get it insured. None of the 5 or so major carriers he called would touch it due to the liability.

It ended up in a 6 month court battle.

Sister in law had a 5 month old Honda Odyssee Touring fully loaded... her girlfriend drove to Starbucks and it was T-boned by a transit bus... girlfriends fault for running a stop sign...

This was a 43k sticker car that sustained 31k damage... insurance insisted of fixing...

There were also problems with repairs... the insurance recommended body shop submitted a very detailed bid... replace many body panels with OEM Honda which they did NOT do... and my brother took them to task on it and the insurance company because if you use the recommended company the repairs are warranted for as long as you own the car...

It got really nasty and he got the State involved for fraud complaint... charging for OEM and not delivering or repairing when charged for replacement... over two months of car rental too...

It's been 8 years and no tire wear or other problems... the only ones saying repair was the adjuster...

My understanding is that if a car has a salvage title, it's hard to get collision insurance. You should be able to get liability insurance on anything that can be licensed. Part of the risk of a salvage vehicle.

The main company's won't touch a salvage period around here.

Makes sense. They don't want to be liable for something that may not be put back together right, hence no liability insurance.

My friend in the Utility Upfitting Business got a visit from the Ford Rep today. Apparently Ford will offer all kinds of hardware to deal with steel to alum. transition. I'd like to see that price list. And, it is apparently essential that such fasteners be torqued appropriately. What a FREAKIN nightmare!

A new member of the aluminum club: in 2015 GM made the Suburban hood and tailgate out of aluminum, to reduce weight. So it "only" weighs 6,015 lbs....

Same thing and worse has happened to many steel bodied vehicles before that; hence the "not responsible for damages" disclaimer at all the automatic car washes around. Does suck extra bad when ya ignore such disclaimers and it happens to you though...

Yikes! That brush must have really grabbed on tight for it to whip the truck repeatedly after tearing it out. That had to be a helpless feeling hearing the car wash trash the truck.
I don't go to a car wash very often, but when I do it is always a brushless.

That disclaimer doesn't absolve them from damage due to negligence if it does any good at all. Wife drove her car through a car wash a while back and a durn come-a-long was stuck in the roller. It beat the crap our of her car and I made them pay for the damages. No way to know if the come-a-long was snatched out of someones truck or if they were using it to hold something together in the car wash. My guess is the latter. The Store owner tried to pull that "Not Responsible" stuff on me. I told him to expect a call from my attorney and he changed his tune.
