But they are useless for anything except mowing. And you can't actually zero turn without tearing up the yard. The design won't work for a earth moving implement.

Actually, that's where people get confused. YOU CAN "zero turn" without tearing up turf. You CAN'T "pivot turn" (pivot on one wheel not moving) without tearing up turf.
As for "earth moving", I assume you meant 'ground engaging'... as any CUT is virtually useless for "earth moving". With regard to light ground engaging equipment (harrows, blades, cultivators, power rakes, etc.)... a front mount ZTR is perfectly of pulling them... even moreso, if they had a reversible operating position and counterweights.
Have you ever seen a commercial duty front mount zero turn? They're basically a shrunken Versatile 4400 series with a lower CG.
Kubota M59, Kubota L3800, Grasshopper 428D, Topkick dump truck, 3500 dump truck, 10 ton trailer, more lighter trailers.
The problem is it requires traction on both wheels otherwise you go in circles. Ive lost traction on one wheel countless times. Otherwise 4wd and a locking differential would be useless.
