Gravel cost

Uh....yea.

I think you meant to say something like gravel weighs more for a given volume than limestone.

I don't think you can get away with saying that a ton of gravel weighs more than a ton of limestone.

I am pretty sure a ton of gravel weighs exactly the same as a ton of gravel, as a ton of gold as a ton of feathers. :)

Gold weighs more per ounce than limestone, (and less on a pound basis) but I didn't know gravel did.

No,, an ounce of gold and an ounce of limestone and an ounce of feathers all weigh exactly the same..

Yea....issue of my finger typing something different than my brain was thinking.

A yard of gravel is about 3000#
A yard of limestone is 2700#

So you get more volume per ton.

So as an example....let's say you need a 500' driveway, 10' wide, 1' thick. That's 185 yards of material.

That would require 250 yds of limestone....or 280 yards of gravel.

If gravel is $13/ton and limestone $16/ton....that makes limestone 23% more expensive per ton.

But the job as a whole....would be $4000 for limestone or $3640 for gravel. Making limestone only 10% more expensive.

In other words......that $13 ton of gravel is equal to $14.30 worth of limestone. Which makes limestone a little more enticing than comparing by weight at $13 and $16

Moss you and I are in the same County. WHere do I get this map?

I was given a book by a friend of mine that is a forester. He's the one that reforested our property. Very handy.

Today, its all on line.

First, go here:
Web Soil Survey - Home

Click the big, green START WSS button.

On the Area Of Interest tab (AOI), find your piece of property.

On the toolbar you'll see two AOI buttons. Ones for making a rectangle, the other is for making a polygon. Choose one of those buttons and draw a box or polygon around your property.

Once you've defined your Area Of Interest, click the tab at the top labeled SOIL MAP and there you go! It should show all the soil types in your AOI.

For example, I'm sure you're familiar with this local area....

Then there'll be a legend to the left describing the soil types in your AOI like this...

I will say, though, that this electronic map does not match my old book. While the defined areas are very similar, the soil types for my property in the book are tyner, fox (the one with the gravel), and adrian muck, while this electronic map shows mine as coloma, oshtemo, gilford, tracy, and antung. The book told me the fox area would have gravel right under it, and it did. This electronic version says the gravel will be at least 48" down, and its more like just below the topsoil.

Anyhow..... its still a great resource for anyone in the country to use. If in doubt, dig a test hole. :)

Now a really cool feature of that website is you can go to the shopping cart and generate a custom soil report for free, and when you check out, download it for free. Its a really nice looking report.

Is this for similar size materials, sandstone and limestone typically have similar density?

Yes. Comparing 57 to 57 or 8 to 8 or any other uniform washed stone.

Crusher run in either would be prooortiomally heavier, as the fines dill the voids

No, an ounce of gold is measured in troy ounces, which equals 31.1034768 grams (1.097142857143 oz.), but there are 12 troy ounces per troy pound, (373.24 g) rather than the 16 ounces per pound (453.59 g). A "regular" ounce weighs 28.3495 grams and there are 16 per pound.
