Idiots and winter driving

/ Idiots and winter driving #101
Growing up in the San Fernando Valley most the guys had loud cars and/or loud bikes. We knew exactly why we liked it. I guarantee it did not have anything to do with road safety. We did not feel like we needed a cover story.

lol I don't need a cover story, I don't ride in packs or try to impress anyone and can care less if I look cool or not, I ride a Japanese cruiser with a ATV looking helmet because I like the visor, keeps the sun out of my eyes.

Loud cars are just stupid and annoying.

Loud cars are safer & you're a fool if you don't think so, MUCH safer then loud motorcycles.

How in the H_ll did this thread get so sideways on loud motorcycles & cars when we are talking about winter driving?

Loud motorcycles are MUCH safer in the snow.

They are, the noise breaks up the ice so you drive on nothing but dry pavement

Like a sonic boom of awesomeness

Because the discussion title is Idiots and Winter Driving! Not necessarily at the same time. Jon

You guys think I should get my bike tires studded? Think that will help?

I also want to apologize for getting upset earlier, I have a lot of respect for 99% of you lol no need to argue about motorcycles in a winter thread lol

You keep sticking to this one scenario (and yes, I've read your following 3-4 posts). We get it; constantly 'on' hazard lights irritate you to apoplectic heights.

However, you are consistently changing the goal-posts of provided examples to suit your own 'position'. "half a minute" to go 500 metres (let alone 5-7kms) is ridiculous.

Here's another scenario... actually, it's a true story that happened to me many years ago. I was driving in upper-state Maine, on my way to Nova Scotia. It was night and there was heavy to medium fog. My headlights were on low beam, no hazards and there was a vehicle about half a mile ahead of me.

Suddenly, the vehicle ahead puts their hazards 'on'. They're still moving, so I become even more alert as to 'why'. The short story is that there was a moose on the 2-lane highway... scared the crap out of me 'cause all I saw of it was four spindly legs & its underbelly.

Had that conscientious and courteous driver ahead of me not put their hazard lights on to warn me, half a mile behind him, I shudder to think what the consequences for me could've been.

four way flashers on slow moving farm equipment that is passed in a brief perid of time is another whole topic that a winky blinky fan introduced, not me. The topic was about the rude drivers who run the four way flashers into the eyes of following drivers at any and all speeds, visibility range and precipitation..

Speaking of idiots, we just got home from the cottage after wasting an extra hour because people were driving at about 30 miles an hour on the 6 Lane Divided Highway which did not have that much snow on it. The tire tracks part of each of the three lanes was completely bare, with huge traction, but no, everyone had to drive like a turtle. Have driven that route hundreds of times, including many many times in the winter when there was snow storms and the like. Have never seen such a bunch of slowpokes before. And I am definitely not a maniac driver. I am generally more careful than others, but in this case they just got it wrong.

I really wonder what proportion of them had their snow tires on already, and how much that contributed to the big jam up.

Usually I see people driving too fast during a snow event at the beginning of the year, but this was completely the opposite. Very surprising.

Depends on the size of the studs like the folks run at Georgetown CO or other places during the winter festivals. Some are 3 inches long. The races I actually like best are the stock tire ones, both cars and bikes :D ;););)

Here is my ATTEMPT :D at putting this back on track. I find that improper use of headlights (i.e. not having them on or only having DTRs on) is really a problem in my commute to work. I cannot tell you how many times I have been in a hard snow or rain and driven up on someone who doesn't have any rear tale lights on at all because they are relying only in their DTR Lights. People need to be aware of their lighting and know their vehicles better.

The other thing I see is people running on balogna rine tires because they are too cheap or broke to replace them. This will turn even a Subaru into a sled and it happens all the time. I can tell by watching a car pull away from a traffic light if they have crap tires or not.

While on the subject of tires.. do not rely soley on what the guy at the tire store tells you.. do your research on Tirerack.com and other sites. All tires are not created equal when it comes to all season or snow.

These are two variables that are easily controlled by even an idiot that would help reduce snow related accidents.

:) But that's just it Mate, you're the only one in this discussion that considers them rude. So far everyone else has said, at worst, it's somewhat irritating. On the other hand, at least they (the people running with hazards on) recognise that they are a hazard to other drivers and are letting people know. If they forget to turn them off (which they should once they aren't 'Tail End Charlie') it's probably because they're concentrating too much on their driving. Let it go, B&D.

I've already stated in an earlier post that if I've got a full load of hay in my ute (which I don't want to spill) and I'm going 70-80kph in a 100kph zone I am going to have my hazard lights on... as a courtesy and warning to any drivers coming up behind me. I'll pull over and let them by at the first, safe, opportunity and I usually get a wave in thanks once they're past. Once I'm driving (with that load) in a speed zone that I can maintain, I'll remember to turn my hazards off... because I'm no longer a hazard.

Now, if you want to 'throw stones' at other vehicles who have left their turn signal on, I'd be happy to hand you the ammunition.

Very much agreed. These DTRs are slowly coming into play down here with the newer vehicles but there are so many people who won't turn their lights on until they can't see the speedometer.

Ride with both and see for yourself, two conditions

1. Hilly windy country roads at night.

2. Day time and night time is moderate to heavy traffic not riding aggressively.

After a few hours of riding in both, anyone will be able to see louder pipes are safer, that's why I ride with them.

And all this time I thought it was cause you "loud pipers" had a small little guy hanging! It was all about safety.. boy I feel bad now!

Okay the previous video are cool. All I can offer is the I'm in 4WD with my tractor.

That's big lifted loud trucks that compensate lol

For sure that.. not even a question.

From what I see, youngsters and a lot of Harley guys run loud pipes because they think it's "cool". I hated loud pipes just as much as you all that have been bashing me, after getting a bike and had a few close calls I put them on.

If it seriously wasn't for the safety aspects of the pipes I would prob sell my bike, been thinking about it actually, all it would take is one bad accident and I could be out of work or in pain the rest of my life. I love my bike, love the road cruising but people at all new heights now just don't pay attention. So it may not be weather related but I can still complain about people not paying attention to bikes.
