When I was shopping for a new truck in 2012, Toyota didn't make a long bed with an extra cab truck. Only short beds, so that wasn't even an option for me. They where also having a lot of recalls because of their engines. I forget what it was exactly, but it was pretty big news at the time. While I've always been a fan of Toyota, I always end up buying something else when I start comparing them and reading up on the reviews.

I just bought my wife a Chrysler mini van. For a Toyota with leather seats and power doors like hers, they wanted $9,000 more.

Pay now or pay later. (0: You won't find too many unhappy Toyota owners.

Will be interesting to see how many miles you get on the van.

We just got back from a hunting trip to Paris, Tx. My buddy wanted to take his newer tundra with the 5.7 since it has so much leg room. Well the ride was tolerable but the fuel mileage was horrible. Turned one of the guys off wanting one for that reason. I'm thinking it was around 10-12 highway. We were stopping twice a day for fuel and it's a 4.5-5 hr drive. He said the tank was small that was ridiculous. Lindsay's truck gets atleast 540-560 per tank

Brett
That's strange... I've had 3 Tundra's, one with the smaller 4.7 v8 and 2 with the 5.7. The 4.7 averaged 14 mpg mixed and 16 on highway trips. Both 5.7's average 14.7 mpg mixed and 17-18 mph on highway trips (that's with just the family, dog, misc luggage, and a Leer cap... Not pulling anything other than the small boat).

Fuelly seems to mirror that also.

Does your friend have an 8" lift and 35" tires, and drive 90+ mph on the highway? Seems unbelievable to average 10-12 unless he's trying to do it

I understand. Anymore, I search the country to find the vehicle (or whatever item) that I want. My last two HD Ford trucks came from Colorado and Texas. My Tundra was in Ohio. My last two tractors were Wisconsin and Virginia. Not worth settling... Work harder to find the truck or item u really want and have it brought to you, or go get it (the way I see it anyhow)

I just looked. You can only get the 8' bed Access Cab on the SR model which is the lowest trim available. I didn't realize that they made that model either, I don't think I've ever seen one. I also noticed that some trim packages only offer the crew cab with 5.5' bed (higher level trims).

Not trying to argue here, but Look at this on eBay... 217 Toyota Tundra Double cab long bed | eBay

Well either way it's a rare item. Their website must be missing information. I did not know they made that configuration. I know for a fact when I bought my truck it was very hard finding a crew cab with a 6.5' bed (like 2-3 in Houston).

He was going 70-75. It has aftermarket wheels but I don't think the tires are much bigger than stock if anything. He said it had 4.33 gears which seem really steep (new 450 I ordered comes with 4.30) but don't know if that's out of the norm for gassers. When he pulled his 30' Bp camper I think he was saying it was around 6 mpg we are pretty flat around here in SE Texas too

Yeah I believe 4:30 is the gear they use in the 5.7. Sounds like his truck is an anomaly, most guys on the forums are getting about what I get for mileage.

I've got a 2016 Tundra with the 5.7 4x4 and get about 14.7 mpg mixed and 17-18 mpg highway. I do wish it got better mpg. When shopping, by the time I configured an equivalent ford/chevy/dodge for towing capability the price was 10k or more higher than the toyota. Toyota is behind in the electronic gizmos, but I try to avoid them anyway. It's to new for me to personally comment on reliability, but I have high expectations. Good luck to the op with shopping. I hope you find something that works for you.

Sorry to hear about your F150 troubles, guys. A bit of a surprise to me, as I have had 4 of them (2008, 2010, 2014, and my current 2016), and they have all been great. All 5.4's or 5.0's, all 4 x 4 XLT Supercrews (with the XTR option on a couple of them). And all got better mileage than my wife's Honda Pilot!

I bought an '05 F150 Lariat, 5.4, 3.73 geared 4X4 new. Hated it so badly I traded it at 18 mths and 25,000 miles for my present '07 Tundra, 5.7, 4X4. I have 130,000 on the truck and still love it. A friend pulls antique tractors and I haul two on his Bri-Mar equipment trailer; one weighs and pulls at 3500# and the other pulls and weighs 5500#. That's 9,000# of tractors plus the weight of the trailer, estimated to be 4/4500# and it hauls and stops the load with no problem. The Ford had a tough time in the hills with just his 5500# tractor; don't talk to me about Fords

My buddies company has a fleet of service trucks, a mix of Ford, Chevy and Tundra's. At least this was the case 4 years ago, but the Toyota's were the highest cost per mile out of the three, mainly due to poor fuel mileage. I don't know about the most recent Toyotas. I'm a big Toyota fan and been happy with every Toyota I've owned (2 4runners, 2 highlanders, celica) and I have no reason to think their Tundra would be any different. But I have heard a number of people complain about the mileage.

My wife's F150 with the Ecoboost isn't to great either. We average around 14- 16, but it does have great get up and go.

My Tundra has the 300 hp 4.6l engine. More power than I'll ever need. It gets about 18mpg around town and 23-24 on the open road. I don't tow for a living so I figured I didn't need the 5.7l. Hasn't been a problem. I tow my antique cars in my 20 foot enclosed trailer with no issues.

Fanboy? My team is in the ACC I don't particularly like the fact that year after year the road to the National Championship runs through the SEC.
Roll Tide!

Sounds lovely. I just couldn't find one with an 8 foot bed and that really nice extra cab. Maybe you live in an area with a greater demand for it then I do. For me, that was a deal breaker.
Order one. Problem solved!

I installed the Wagoner pads and I took my truck to the shop after I realized there was a problem. Pads are very simple to install. When I brought it in and told them what I had done, the owner of the shop, a client and friend of mine, told me about all the issues he has had with Wagoner parts and that he no longer uses them. It was the owner of the shop that got the manager of the store to tell me about all the problems he had encountered selling them. Then later denied saying any of that to me, and then on the phone to my friend. My guess is that somebody at Wagoner, or up high at ABC explained to him that he better shut up and stop saying what he had been saying.
Oh OK I understand.

I was a line tech at a Ford dealer and I won't have one. They let customers do the r+d work. Every f-150 and expedition I saw ate brake pads and rotors. I was there for the 6.0 and 6.4 debacles too.

Just my personal experience, never had any trouble with a 1/2 ton gas burning chevy. I've never had one with less than 120,000 miles except when we bought my wife's new tahoe. Sold a 93 with 290,000 miles. Drive a 2009 with 150,000 miles.

For all you Toyota fans, I posted a few weeks back about Toyota setting 3.4 billion dollars aside for rusty frame repair on Tacomas and Tundras. This is the second major recall they have had for this problem. I've seen two of them that appear to have this problem, it appears the frame rusts under the bed from what I see. Nothing against Toyota, I just think they have problems also.

I believe that was prior to 2007. Was actually a pretty good deal if your truck qualified: They would replace the entire frame. I had brought in my 2004 Sequoia for the recall, it didn't wieldy because mine only had typical surface rust. Instead, as part of the recall they sprayed the frame with undercoating.

I have a 2007 since new, no rust. To be fair I do live in the deep South. After seeing my sons Jeep after one Virginia winter, I am amazed any brand lasts...

This is very similar experience and feelings I hear from Toyota Tundra owners. They are good trucks.
