Guys, I'm wanting to get an implement for breaking ground behind my Kubota L3301 (32hp).
I don't know anything about plowing or disking.
The ground I want to work I've cleared with a grapple, back blade, box blade, and brush hog. Less than 3 acres.
Its SE OKLA, rocky as ****, thin dirt, and was bulldozed flat around 1997.

I had thought a two bottom plow but reading through the past posts, maybe a disk setup is better for me with my rocky ground?

Not really sure what to grow but want to grow SOMETHING beside briars and red cedars! Maybe a deer plot or some kinda low maintenance vegetable to start with.
It's not perfect but not all garden plots start out good.

Vintage implements is fine for recommendations also. I enjoy bringing them back to life.

Never farmed and want to do a bit as a learning hobby. I'm attached to the land I have and don't want to move but do what I can with what I got. (I mean the land. I can buy the toys I need. Just don't want to buy the wrong thing or overbuy.)

No, a Moldboard Plow or Disc Plow (which is NOT a Disc Harrow) is better for initial turn of soil. Unless really prolific, rocks will not dull a plow, unless plow is pulled for miles. Plow will disrupt roots, which a Tandem Disc Harrow sized for your tractor will roll over.

A 12" moldboard plow will cut a furrow 6" deep and pile turned soil next to the furrow 6" high.

You will need a Disc Harrow to succeed the plow, to lower plow furrows. The first pass with the Disc Harrow have the gangs set at an aggressive angle. The second pass have the gang angles set two increments less aggressively. The goal of harrowing is to leave a smooth seed bed.

A Spring/Summer food plot, succeeded by a Fall/Winter food plot, succeeded by a Spring/Summer food plot, each plowed into the soil, will do a lot to enrich soil and reduce weed seed bank.

Take some time and visit your neighbors. Don't puke your money on the junkie down the street. Your neighbors can tell what works best in your area and then you can spend your money wisely at the neighborhood junkie's place....... Now how do you suppose I know that?

Disc Plows: Google

There should be used Disc Plows available in Oklahoma.

We used a 2 disc plow when we lived in OK. Discs are less likely to get hung up on something and break something.

What would be really useful, if they made them for big tractors, would be a rotary plow off the PTO. Had one on my Gravely. Great for breaking up ground.

With thin, rocky soil, you don't want to use a moldboard plow. That will just flip the soil and bury the good stuff. I'd use an offset disc with an attached harrow of some kind (spike harrow, tires attached to a piece of chain link fence, etc.).

Good luck.

I see Monroe Tufline makes an Offset Disc which a 2,750 pound Kubota L3301, with 4-WD, should be able to pull. Peculiar that Tufline's web sites specifies neither 'Offset' widths nor weights, only lengths.

Forget the plow and harrow and all that stuff. It's too much setup work and they will just get in the way 99% of the time and rust in the rain. I would go with a simple Dearborn/Pittsburgh cultivator (or similar) like this one that I rebuilt and now use as I am telling you to use.

And here's my rebuild thread above.

I'm as much as a plow and tillage guy as the next but multiple passes with this will do a better job and you don't need 30 acres to learn the drill. There's no dead furrow to contend with and no trying to smooth clumps of dirt and debris. Each pass makes things smoother. It will pull up some rocks but pick them up and call it good. These are the perfect garden implement and there are zillions of them around. Use it with 1 3/4" or 2" straight points and not shovels. Piece of cake and it's way more fun to use.

So with this, a cultivator is all I probably need?
Is this close to being a "chisel plow" which I see some of around me?

What width should I be watching for?

Thanks.

Thanks. I found a YouTube video from that showing a disk plow working. I've never seen one of those and found it interesting.
