Takata airbags

That is certainly a concern of mine..
To date, I am with with "jimmysisson". I have NOT had the passenger airbag deactivated.
I have filed a complaint about this situation, with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Probably won't be any action, but I wanted there to be a record.

Esp. in the USA, unless I could ensure that nobody would be sitting in the passenger seat, given how long the recalls are taking I'd have Toyota remove and store the seat.

Lawsuits get filed every day over much less.

We got the "don't sit in the passenger seat" letter from Subaru last June. Finally got a notification from the dealer two weeks ago that the replacement was available. So seven months.

Just had an interesting thought!
If the Corolla were to be stolen, and a thief's passenger was hurt/killed by the Takata air bag, would the thief, and/or passenger, have legal recourse?
In today's litigious society, it would not surprise me.

Just called the local Toyota dealer.
The Takata fix is described as being vehicle specific.
Per dealer service dept: "No Corolla fix is available yet".
Anyone have information that this is not true?

I worked in a privately owned store, where the owner brought in a small floor safe. He did laugh when I said we better get on with drilling out the concrete floor to accept the internal mounting bolts - we both agreed he'd probably get sued if a thief broke in and got a hernia or dropped it on his foot trying to haul it away....

The problem I have with all of this is that it certainly makes the vehicle less usable, and in the beginning, when you bought it, you bought a usable vehicle. I have a dodge truck that's been recalled twice for these airbags, first the drivers side, next the passengers side. 2012 jeep with the same problem. Passengers side still hasn't been replaced after 8 months. We have not used this truck for routine service after the recall because of the danger of the airbag inflators, only used it when absolutely necessary. Even if these airbag recalls are being performed free, they have taken away from the value of the vehicles until they are repaired. Think some of these fines need to go back to the effected customers to compensate them for their losses and risks. Anyone hurt or killed should be getting a big chunk of this. Money can't compensate, but it should be going to those who were defrauded by misrepresenting their products ?????

I'm not affected by these recalls, but as I was reading fried's posts I was thinking "Can't use the passenger seat, in a 5 seat vehicle. So that means it's OK to only pay 80% of your monthly car payments, until the repair is done ?"

I'd suspect fried's car is paid for, but there will be people affected who are still making payments. Loss of use seems pretty clear.

I remember the Pinto being on the roads. Technology has advanced since then, but business practices, not much.

Probably a better lesson for the industry would be having to supply free unaffected vehicles until repairs are done.

That raises an interesting legal issue. Before the repair is done, if someone is injured sitting in the passenger seat, is the notice-informed owner of the car then liable ?

The law says that ignorance is not an excuse.

If someone takes down a stop sign or a no parking and you inadvertently break the law you are still held liable.
Happened to me and Judge still fined me.

OK, it was a no parking violation where the sign was missing but I still had to pay. { was even more frustrating as I had even deposited coins in the closest meter thinking that the cars were simply miss aligned with the meters)

The ruling was "Ignorance is not and excuse to break a law", I later confirmed that with other legal professionals.
So we had better have maps for all the world's stop signs to be sure as to stop for all the missing ones.

The vehicle manufacturers spec the parts they need to build a vehicle, then they get bids from venders who build the parts. Lowest bid wins. Consumer looses.

Makes setting up speed traps real easy . (I'm agreeing with you).

AFAIK, you can never depend on ignorance as a legal defense, at least as a private citizen.
