Anyone have a LED dusk to dawn pole light?

Do you need 1500 watts, 150 is probably more then enough for most. I have 100 watt. $10 for HPS.

15000 watt huge difference.

No, I don't need 1500W. As I originally had said, it was mainly to point out that the perception that the prices on LEDs get farther ahead of traditional lighting as you "go bigger" is actually incorrect. At the high end of the spectrum on the "big lights", they're actually priced better than the little household LEDs, which can cost 3 or 4 times what a basic light costs.

Considering you can get the equivalent of light from a 300W LED versus the 1500W halide for nearly the same buy-in money, the LED is simply the better buy.

I have no problems with stories. I like a GOOD story. When that proverbial dead horse has been beat beyond recognition, it is no longer very interesting.

Then move on. I mentioned I too wanted a new yard light, to show that I opened this thread because I was interested in the content.

Did you notice how many lumens you get for 1500 watts, i am guessing alot.

No, but when most LEDs are rated as "1500w equivalent", the lumens are typically somewhere near whatever traditional bulb the LED is made to replace. The 40,000 lumens spec'd on the LED previously linked, is a higher lumen rating and lower dollar per lumen than anything else posted so far. The new Phillips LEDs are seriously top notch. The smaller ones are a nice value too.

I still don't see why folk insist on going with "little" lights. There are LED floods that are made comparable to standard 1500W metal halide parking lot lights. Prices can be comparable also.

Metal Halide

40,000 Lumen LED

1500 watt MH for $600, is for the fixture not the bulb. Bulb is $20-30. 150k to 170k lumens.

The LED is 40k lumens for $500. $500x4 is $2000. Plus installation materials and labor.

Devil is in the details. I am not thinking sinister motive, just sloppy. Ego maybe, sure you are right.

I am paid to make sound choices. Not everyone is programmed or trained to think like that. I am not saying I have never made a spontaneous purchase cause I wanted it.

We can do this all day, page after page.

Ok, better lumens on the halides per dollar. Install halides for best light where consumption is no issue. Four of the LED units would still be less wattage used. 300w x 4= 1200w. I personally say the details ARE the devil... As are the marketing weenies.

It really depends on what you goals are. LEDs are good at lessening energy consumption, and in many cases will provide better lifespan. Cost is typically best compared over lifespans. Buy-in is a little higher for LEDs, but it is rapidly getting better.

So LED saves 300 watts only. You need to install four fixtures. Since you don't care about money, how about the enviroment? All metal and copper that must be mined, poured, and then shipped, in the form of fixtures, conduit, and wire.

One think tree huggers never take into account is material. Wind mills are only 1.5 MWs, have a huge tower, and transformer for each tower, then conduit and wire between. I can't do the math on this one. Granted there are miner and truckers back home.

The slow progress of LED is due to the slow adoption. I'm no tree hugger, but I am a dollar hugger. If the rate of adoption increases, so does the amount of dollars available for further R&D. At the rate of improvement in LED tech, as long as everything (including adoption rates) remain steady, by the time that $500 light fails (if it lives near the projected lifespan), you will be able to replace it with something better for less money and the savings over that lifespan offsets the cost.

If I can spend some extra cash today on something to save me a few bucks and may potentially save me some work later on, I'll do it. If nobody ever bought and tried new things, new things would cease to be created.

As far as extra mining and materials, recyclables and jobs...

Drop the whole political rant junk, nobody is here for that. Nobody is trying to save or destroy the planet in this thread and what folk spend their money on is no concern of yours unless you are a communist. The OP asked about LED pole lights.
