We shouldn't be critical of a guy asking a question, especially when he suggests he might be too picky. I merely added my thoughts, like others have done, hopefully helping him make a decision for himself. I'm used to seeing similar chips and scrapes, and expect THAT as the norm when buying equipment (not cars or trucks). Sometimes it's fine but there are times that I repaint or touch up before assembling and using. Sometimes I repaint an older piece to bring it back to life and it looks better than new. Well almost :)
I don't think there's a right or wrong answer or opinion on these things. If you aren't happy, then contact the seller and discuss it and work it out with them directly. If you want feedback on what others have done or what they expect, post it on a public forum. Don't get upset if you get a variety of opinions though, and that many won't be jumping on your band wagon to criticize a manufacturer, dealer, etc. (this wasn't directed at the OP, but in general)

This has been an interesting read. It all boils down to customer expectations verses competitive choices manufactures are forced to make. I have seen many people make what I consider strange decisions just to save a few dollars. When you buy a new car you want to be the guy that makes the chips and scratches. I get that, but here we are talking about implements that by their intended use get scratched and chipped during normal use so I don’t have a concern over minor damage upon receipt.

As far as paint goes, I am not a fan of powder coat. In our business some of the products we make are painted metal cabinets for use outside at airports. We have had much better success with a two part polyurethane paint from Sherwin Williams which is two coats thick over primer. The primer and each coat is heat cured under infrared lights. Yes the paint will still scratch and chip, but overall it is a more durable finish than anything else we have used. In fact we have been refurbishing and repainting cabinets that have been use for 10+ years in an airport environment and the base metal and cabinet are still in good condition.

Don't listen to the guy demanding powder coat. I hate the stuff. Once it gets chip, it rusts faster than regular paint because moisture gets behind the powder coat and the coating keeps the moisture there. Why pay more for something that has less quality and is a pain to touch up later.

Just keep painting them and people can touch up later if needed.

Powder coat would be ETA weak link if they did it, but they don't.

ABSOLUTELY TRUE !!
Maybe in the South powder coating is OK, but not in the North!
Rust forms readily under a powder coat chip, .....and .......
Powder coat is brittle ...... chips easily!

Two part epoxy paint is the real answer, but whatever the coating.....
No powder coat!!!

Painted metal cabinets for use outside at airports?
Cabinets for what?
Are they for airport personnel only use?

I'll scratch up my impliments unloading them or hitching them up. It's just gonna happen no matter what. They are heavy equipment that is usually about to get sand/dirt/rock blasted on at least one surface on the next use.

I agree most powder coat I've seen doesn't stick as well as paint & is brittle. Paint is easier to touch up (read possible at all). Chipped or scratched powder coat usually just keeps flaking.

This has been an interesting thread. It seems to come down to what we expect versus what we will tolerate. I wouldn't let paint scratches on an implement bother me much, but if a new tractor came to me scratched up, I would probably send it back for repair.

I can't blame the OP for being unhappy, and having been in the freight business for many years, I know the big and heavy stuff is not babied during transit, compared to say, fluorescent light fixtures. It seems reasonable for EA to send a can of touch up paint to the customer who can't tolerate the scratches. But how is that guy going to somehow be ok with all the scratches and dents that show up after some real world use?

I kind of live in both worlds. I probably wouldn't be concerned with scratches on an implement, but yeah, I do admit to waxing my tractors now and then

Curbside counters used by American Airlines - we build cabinets for airports - jensencabinet.com.

AA started a rebranding effort 2 years ago and we are changing the color on the cabinets as well as removing their older "scissor" logo.

I'm new here and have noticed that anyone who publicly questions that particular sponsor of this forum gets all kinds of defensive responses from the members. Seems out of Travis' character, as I've noticed he remains fairly professional and is always quick to correct whatever issue, no matter how small or inconsequential. I get being a satisfied customer and all, but people need to chill out around here sometimes.
