YM 2000 PTO Speeds

I recently bought a YM 2000. It is the first Yanmar I have owned. It is used exclusively by my brother at his place. I have zero seat time.

He called me recently and asked why the tractor has 3 PTO speeds. I told him he was mistaken, tractors don't have 3 PTO speeds. He sent me the attached picture of the PTO lever which shows 3 speeds and neutral. He said that it indeed has 3 speeds. He operated the PTO in all of the three settings and each was a different speed. He does have a manual, and it only mentions two PTO speeds for the YM 2000. Any insight here would be appreciated.

1) Nominal 540 RPM at full throttle
2) Nominal 540 RPM specifically when used at 3/4 full throttle
3) Nominal 1000 RPM when used at full throttle

from the parts manual: 588/730/1260 rpm. I believe these speeds are achieved with engine at 2200rpm.

730 of there abouts is commonly meant to give 540rpm when used at a lower engine speed to save fuel

On my 2000 I run 1st. gear at 2100-2200 but now I have my 2nd. gear working and staying locked into gear I run my Eng. speed @ about1600-1700 which comes up to 561 PTO. Also since I'm a straight drive It only takes a few second of a wait to be able to shift gears now. Which makes it a lot easier to mow. I can shift into 3rd. PTO but found no use to so far....

There's a typo there that could be dangerous to someone. You might want to correct that post: PTO 3 will be over 1,000 rpm, not 100 rpm, at full throttle.


TNhobbyfarmer, the manual usually provided for YM2000 is actually the English-language manual for YM2000's American-market twin, the YM240. YM240 has a few minor mods from YM2000 to meet US safety standards or expectations, one of these is its 2 speed pto of 540 and 1,000 rpm output @ 2200 engine rpm.

Other changes from that manual you might note: YM2000's throttle is push to slow down, not pull as shown in that American manual. And YM2000 doesn't have the over-run clutch internally in the pto. Aside from those, two-piece rear wheels, and paint color I can't think of any other cases where the manual differs from your YM2000.

Thanks for that clarification California. I noticed the 100 and was scratching my head wondering why a higher range would be slower. 1000 makes a lot more sense.

Followed your link and looked at the price list.
Had no idea they were that expensive in 1979.

Yep they have 3 speeds. One 540 two is like 720 and 3 is like 1040
