How far out can I extend a structure supported on one end?

If you encase the ends of the beams in the end foundation, you will have integral foundation and just need rebar.
The integral foundation can have soil placed against it for smooth transition from ground to dock

Is that an approved often used type of application? You realise the beam end that is encased in concrete will be in tension?

Integral abutments are used in Ohio, very common in Tennessee

Integral abutments are common with multiple spans. Similar forces in abutment with cantilever or multiple spans. Highest tensile forces will be at support closest to water

Those should be in compression.

The beam would fail at the support closest to the water before it would fail at the end support from tensile forces

Bottom flange, at waters edge of concrete = compression
Top flange, at waters edge of concrete= tension.

Edge of concrete at waters edge is the highest force for both

Good program for beam analysis:

I think it's $35 to download the "non-professional" version.
I used it for a 25' and a 50' bridge using doug fir utility poles for beams.

The water edge support is in compression. The land side support is in tension. The beam and the supports are different entities as are the connections between the beam and support. Lots of different ways for the connections.

A beam usually fails where sheer or moment values are highest.

thanks for the helpful explanation

Supports can fail in the technical sense in that they allow excessive movement, but they rarely completely fail.
Most rolled beams will fail in compression of the flange in the area of highest moment if loaded as a cantilever. The highest moment would be at the support closest to the water
