Your question was will a half ton truck do it a few times.
Sure it will ,however it will not be safe.

All ratings on all vehicles are in prime conditions. Not real world.

10k lbs trailer going up and down hills and around curves will push a half ton truck around. At best you will be in for a wild ride.

Engines have plenty of power to move the weight but it is tires, brakes, suspension, frame and weight that keep everything stable. Safer for you and others on the road.

As already mentioned, I would suggest a 3/4 ton truck with whatever engine you want.

As stated the 3/4t and 1/2t use the same cabs with the exception of the 99-2016 Fords so external size is the same.
If you were on level ground I would say a modern high capacity 1/2t would be fine but with those hills I would personally step up to a 3/4t, the Rams and Fords ride a little rougher due to the solid front axle if that's a concern.

I park a Crew cab short bed Ram in DC sometimes and while it's not as fun as my Corolla in the city it isn't impossible.

Oh and houstonscott, I decided to google Cummins rms problems. Put my mind at ease, couldn't find any problems.......

With 9000 lbs. or more, if you get a half ton or even a heavy half ton, you'll have to fiddle with stabilizer bars. Heavy 3/4 ton or 1 ton is what I recommend. IMHO, 1/2 tons are for taking you to work, and 3/4 tons are for doing the work.

I'm sorry to get off topic, but Cummins and RMS doesn't bring up anything from google. Are you thinking of some other problem? I was a Cummins owners until about a year ago and never heard of a "RMS" problem. The only reason I bring it up is I would hate for the OP to find a Cummins at a great deal and pass on it because it got a bum steer. Funny about RMS = root mean square. I am a land surveyor and my GPS equipment pops up a number for RMS that is a indicator of the quality of the GPS shot. I see RMS almost every day.

The guy who delivered my Branson, box blade and rotary cutter had a brand new diesel Ford and it was rattling and smoking out the hood when he got here, and left a puddle of diesel.

I think the real question is what was wrong with the delivery guy's truck? That has me wondering.
