No plate on the side.. its a closed system.. I HATE'M ..
The worst designed injection system EVER produced.. I feel bad for anyone that owns one.

Finally switched to another computer to get the big picture. This is a completely different pump than on the 4200. My apologies for wasting everyone's time.

Yeah.. that's what I was working off of.. Yanmar MP pump.. No access to the internals w/o taking it apart.. NOT a DIY project.
AND the main pumping unit cant be repaired.. it has to be replaced, at a tune of around a GRAND..

Just one other thought on verifying rotation...

The FIP is gear-driven. You can view the drive gear by looking through the Oil Fill hole in the Timing Gear Cover (Orange screw cap just in front of the FIP).

There are 2 x Oil Fillers on these engines but the other one is on the rocker cover and largely inaccessible so the one I'm referring to should be familiar to you Nige?

Crank the engine and (with the Oil Fill Cap off) observe the FIP Drive Gear. Does it turn?

Of course, even if this gear turns it's no guarantee that the actual pump is rotating inside but it's something you can check.

Yes a draw, fair enough :)

I have had a look in the filler, but not while it's cranking, I'll do this last check thanks. EDIT: I just checked and the gear rotates.

Do you guys think a car mechanic could swap the pump, or would you use an agricultural engineer?

Okay I've found a specialist who does recons. testing and repairs (Home - Diesel Parts Direct) so I'm planning to take it off, after lining up the timing markers, and send it off.

Ah good, we Nigels stick together you know! I've bought a full service manual from A Repair Manual Store, looks genuine, at $19.99 by download. It's good, just can't see the timing mark on the idle gear so far but I can see the painted one on the driven gear so I'll turn it round a few more times tomorrow. The opening isn't as big as it's shown in the manual so I have to peer in at an angle.

Yes I will come back and complete the thread for future sufferers. I felt a bit lost in the beginning and you guys have made a big difference to me. I called my local John Deere agent over a couple of years ago and they wanted £250 to do a backlap!! so calling them about this wasn't on the cards! The test/repair people are quoting £700-800 by the way.
