I have been thinking of making a new dolly for my BX23 backhoe.

I have a wooden one made of 2X4s and plywood. The problem is that it is too high. It makes it difficult to remove the backhoe without hitting/bending the back fender.

I was thinking if I made a metal one out of 1x square metal tubing I could get the top lower. By making the castors sort of outriggers, I was hoping to get the top no more than 2 inches off the floor. This may make it easier to remove since it is like placing it on the ground not on a platform 5 inches in the air.

What do you all think?

Thanks,
Joe Widmayer

BXpanded has one almost exactly like you described. Even if you don't get theirs, you can see what theirs looks like. BXpanded Backhoe Dolly

My concern about the BXpanded is that the are not designed for a BX23. They are great for the later models but not expressly made for a BX23.

I wonder if they were made lower, could you quickly do the backhoe on a BX23 like the video. To clear the rear fender on the BX23, there are additional steps. Not many, but certainly more complicated and a greater risk for error.

I will try to look at the geometry on the BX23 this weekend.

I too love my BXpanded BH dolly. Is the BX23 lower to the ground when installed?

I think that the difference is that the attachment of the backhoe to the tractor is different between the bx23 and bx24+. I have a bx 23 and recently purchased the bxpanded backhoe dolly. I was able to take off the backhoe with very little problem. I haven't put it back on yet, but I don't see much issue. I think that you do have to be a little more careful not to bend the rear fender, although I've already bent it even before I had the dolly. I love the ability to be able to move the backhoe out of the way when it's not in use.

That BXpanded dolly looks like a shopping cart cut down...lol

Dear Srossman, thanks for the info. I is good to hear it works well on the BX 23. I was hoping for it to be as easy as the video if the dolly was lower. That it could rotate off the hooks if it pivoted at a lower point.

Does the backhoe rest in the dolly at an angle tilted back? This would make it unable to pivot at a lower point as that back would not have enough ground clearance. The dolly I made is just a platform of 2X glued together so it sits level.

I like the way you did not need to use the stabilizers on the newer models. Room is always an issue in my garage.

I think the height of the dolly may be important of easy on/off. My only issue with long time storage is the stabilizers slowly loose their pressure and the legs sag. If you store the BH on a dolly in an area that you can't get the tractor close to re-pressurize you could find yourself it a bit of a trap. I wire up my stabilizers to prevent this. Someday I will fab up some hooks and a bar to hold the legs together.

I have a ratchet strap reserved for just the stabilizers. It gets grease on it from the bottom pin on the pads. No big deal since I use the same strap all the time.

Good idea... thanks. I have a cheapo ratchet strap laying around doing nothing!

I went out and looked at mine last night and the backhoe is angled back. I tried to take some pictures, but I don't know how well they show the angle.

Just a test to see if this attachment will work.

Dear Srossman,
Thanks for the pictures. I am torn between just buying the dollies or making them. I have all the tools but am way behind on things. The big thing about making a custom one would be the pivot off to make it as quick and easy as the later model BXs. I hope to just make a jig to try different height pivots. If you get a chance could you measure the dimensions in the following pictures. Also, I wouldn't have to reinvent other parts of the wheel. Thanks.

After considering whether I have the time and energy to build a dolly, I just ordered a BXpanded one. Probably safer in the long run. After I get it, I will post about it and the BX23 BT600.
Thanks,
Joe

Does the guy who dies with the most toys actually win? I think the more I read about these hoes, I'm going to look at a BX23S when I trade next time.

I love my BX23S. So far it has been able to do everything I have asked of it, as long as I was patient and didn't try to ask it to do it too quickly. ;) My issue is that I keep buying things for it. Got the Bro-tek 2" wheel spacers, the BXpanded under armor and fat pads for the stabilizers. Titan Attachments clamp on pallet forks. Even built my own pressure tester. Now looking at a 3rd function valve and grapple. Next Spring will probably bring a flail mower. Every time my wife sees me looking things up on this forum or other sites, she just smiles and shakes her head. lol :)

"the guy dies with the most toys"
Ummmm, actually, no. Because when you die, you obviously cant buy anymore toys,
so the guy that wins is actually the guy thats still alive and still buying more toys...lol

Robert,
If you have the chance to play with the new BX23S FEL/BH, you`ll buy it, i guarantee it.
I was skeptical at first, until i went and looked at one and saw what it could do.
The attachments are far easier on/off than you will ever believe.
And get it with the SSQA, it opens up more opportunities.

I also bought the 60" MMM in the deal. (FEL-BH-MMM-R4 tires $22K OTD)
Dealer loaded my tires for me for free, with stainless stems.
I added the optional cutter edge to my FEL bucket. ($120)
Dealer was over 80 miles away from me. FREE delivery.

I have since built my own BH dolly... cost free due to all the excessive materials i have sitting around in my garage.
Its made from a hydraulic motorcycle lift, welded up everything to it. This makes it MUCH easier lifting the BH into place onto the tractor.
The hydraulic MC lift was given to me, so no cost involved with exception to time to engineer it to work... 2 weekends, orange painted, done.

Great. JUST GREAT! Just what I needed to hear. I was in the barn today telling myself "You don't need to get an 80-Series. You've got plenty of back left to dig those stumps and trench that power line. Why spend the money? It won't be a big deal when you're 75 climbing on/off the tractor to disconnect the loader. What would you use the backhoe for anyway? You'll just become EVERYONE'S new best friend". Right? Who needs a backhoe. Ugh. Someone's telling me I NEED a backhoe.
