Chainsaw chaps.

Since this thread is straying a bit -
I've used the chaps when I knew I was going to have to go through thick thorny brambles with or without a chainsaw.

They also help to protect against ticks, chiggers, snakes and other annoyances.

I chose to not get the chaps, but pants instead. Thought that the chaps were too bulky and somewhat fiddley.

I like those pants but website of local Stihl dealer says "Product Currently Unavailable". No info on price or whether they are unavailable from Stihl entirely or just local dealer? :confused3:

I disagree slightly - ticks and chiggers just walk around. But definitely should protect from snakes.

Not sure about snakes either. I remember early bullet proof vests that would not stop a knife. Chainsaw chaps bind up a saw chain, not sure how effective they are from sharp penetration. But, when it comes to snakes thicker is better so maybe just the thickness would help.

Don't quibble, get the good quality pants, proper boots & helmet with a face sheild.

I found some for $320. So by that logic those are the ones I should get right? I mean they're 3 times more expensive than the Stihl brand so they must be three times safer. See my point?

Was extremely lucky. Got about a 4" laceration on inside lower part of my knee. No tendon, muscle, no knee cap, bone or joint capsule. Got it stitched up in the ER.
?

Hi N80,

You were lucky!

God Bless.

After suturing two patients with injuries similar to [but maybe a little worse than] yours [nasty, deep, and missing some tissue...] last spring, and having had a coupla near misses of my own, I went online at The SportsmansGuide and bought some MilSurp Leg guards- specifically these:

U.S. Military Surplus Shinguards, Used - 36, Tactical Accessories at Sportsman's Guide

Which are ironically Rawlings catcher's leg guards- but they were used by our military.

I have been using them for well over a year, and they have been both protective and reasonable comfortable.

Plus since I have already had to have my left knee replaced twice [long story], and the orthos tell me I don't have much there in the way of future options, I wear them when I split wood, or do anything that might impact [so to speak] my knee and potentially cause an injury there, and they have been very successful at preventing all manner of mishaps to my knees.

YMMV,
PA

They may be good for just above your knees and lower but look where the cut was on the pic I posted. With the combination of a chainsaw, slippery logs, snow, moving branches etc. I want to protect from the soles of my feet to my waist.

I'm in the camp of get them and get a good pair. When have you ever complained about buying quality?

I once needed to "simply" cut a slice of Cedar tree. No problem.... picked (already fallen) tree up with backhoe, wiggled it around where the hoe bucket was sitting on the ground and tree was pinched with bucket, up in the air (about knee height)

All I had to do was start saw and make two cuts. 1st cut to cut the root ball off and give me a straight edge....2nd cut to create the "disk" that the wife wanted.

Easy-peasy

Made first cut, all is well...

During the second cut, the chain jumped off the bar and (thankfully) got caught by the little chain catcher (Stihl 044) so the rotation of the blade stopped BUT, the top of the blade still had some momentum and essentially 'slapped' the dickens out of my knee.

No cut, no bruise no nothing. Maybe a slight oil mark on my pants from the oil....and maybe another mark in my britches for realizing how close I might have come to cutting up my knee.

You never know when/how/if it will happen.

I try to "never" touch my saw without them on.

(try to be just as retentive about hearing protection)
