I agree. While every hurricane is a big deal, the media when nuts over this one and blew it way out of proportion. Now when the next one comes, people will be less likely to believe the warnings, and eventually it will be like Katrina again, when nobody believed how bad it would be because they over did it so many times and nothing happened.

Katrina was lot more about corrupt government squandering money over decades, air marked for infer structure (pumps/dikes ) than a natural disaster.

The media reaction was mainly due to the records set by this storm...also it's size..

Irma is almost the size of Texas. The storm set a new record for the amount of cyclone energy generated in a single day, and for maintaining wind speeds of 185 mph for 37 straight hours. Its eye, which expanded overnight between Thursday and Friday, is wide enough that peak winds could arrive at both sides of the Florida peninsula at the same time.

It is now the storm that all others will be judged...for power if not destructive dollars...

Looks like Irma was a dud. Media way over blew this, a few trees lots of power outages. Dodged the bullet. Media has to search for serious damage this morning.

Tell that to the millions of people without power and with flood damage to their homes. The media didn't blow it out of proportion, they calculated the worst case scenario given the data provided, and if it saved even one life, it was well worth it.

Irma has been downgraded to a tropical storm. Will flood much of the USA SE before RIP in a few days.

All that happened 600 miles out in the Atlantic and 5 days away from Florida, it's was really a CAT 3 at landfall, and a average hurricane. The dangerous NE quadrant was thank god over the Everglades where there is nothing. Nothing like Andrew.

We don't under estimate ANY storms. Kate came in here as a CAT 3 in 85 and tore this place to shreds. We were out of power for two weeks in some areas. Hermine came in last year as a CAT 1 and we were out of power for a week from the damage it caused. Anybody that doesn't heed the warnings when CAT 5 is approaching is a durn FOOL!

I have seen some pretty bad damage on the news from Irma but our area just got some tropical storm force winds from it. Power is out and we will see for how long this time.

In the meantime I am proud to have a good generator purring away out back.

really didn't matter what category the winds were at...the mere size of the storm made it extremely exceptional...like nothing anyone (alive) has ever seen...like I said the storm that all others to come will be judged...!
