The twist I like to grin at is the "my land, I can do what I want" attitude. Your land? Really? Just stop paying your loocal taxes and see who "owns" the land you live on. We are nothing more than renters.

I pay $400 a month for the privilege of coming home each day.
And glad to do it, now you have the right to put up a small sign as long as it dont offend anyone. I just paid my land rental taxes this past Fri. before they changed their mind.

The one and only local gun shop ran afoul of the sign ordinance...

His crime was a pedestal mounted American flag that he put out each day when the shop was open...

He dug in his heels and got a lawyer and went to court... the municipality LOST...

For 19 years there was never a problem and then there was a complaint from someone that found the flag offensive...

I like that story............

I agree with Birdhunter in being happy that I don't live in an area where the government feels that they have a right to tell me how to do everything at my home and control what I'm allowed to do with my land. Hopefully people who live under those restrictive laws will realize that they need to vote in different people to represent them.

I'm afraid your dreaming. City and County ordinances are in place and all over the map with what you can and can't do. Nuisances are a matter of judgement and are enforced according to the whim of the County officials and dependent on the likelihood of profit from the fight. Poor neighborhoods are left alone and richer ones are cited for minor, perceived infractions.

People don't tend to vote in different people. Overwhelmingly they vote in the same good old boys that they know or who know what to say during the campaign. Officials who are only interested in their own benefit.

The next time you think you own your property, try not paying your taxes and you'll find out who really owns it. You are only allowed to stay there as long as you pay what the County determines you owe. You are one of the cash cows that support the very things you detest. One of the ones so easily duped at election time.

So, pay the fees and keep the signs small. Complain about what you think is going on and your perceived rights. Speak in high tones about ownership and rights. Talk about "your" property, as you pay your taxes under the threat of being thrown out. Watch your tax dollars pay the wages of the Nuisance Ordinance enforcers who were hired by your elected officials, who you elected, and sent to tell you what size sign you are allowed to have.

Will you remember the fight at the next election? Or will you just continue to complain about your rights?

Quote, rbstern: "Rejecting basic biology is very trendy with progressives these days."

Uhhm....Rejecting science is trendy with which side?

Example, who rejects:
- Evolution?
- Climate science?
- Birth control /sex education (and studies on effectiveness)?

Which side believes their idol was conceived by immaculate conception? Basic biology anyone? Or turned H2O into ethanol, and was resurrected from the dead?

Well said. Thank you Coby.

There are no ordinances that can not be overturned, rescinded, or nullified. It happens every day.

I recently went to a sign company to see about getting a sign built that advertises my apple orchard. Sign company said to come back after I speak with the Code Enforcement Officer so there are no surprises. I suppose that is alright as some people could really get kinda wild. On the other hand, Maine does not allow billboards which is nice.

Saw this on the news tonight, talk about a load of krap. The city of Rockland Me. says this woman who wants to display her pro Trump sign on her so called own land will pay a find or go to jail, the cities puppets say the signs are just a wee bit too big. This might soon happen at a town near you or even out in the country.

So does this rule mean I cant put up a big Merry Christmas sign without a permit, the thing about permits is they can permit you or permit you not, guess it depends if you voted for Trump or Hillary.
'Shocked': Maine Woman Ordered by City to Take Down Pro-Trump Signs - NECN

My only question is, would this lady have been harassed if it was a "Hillary" or "Bernie" sign?

I agree with you completely and I have made a difference by working locally and on a state level by running for office, organizing against a nuisance ordinance, and organizing against putting meters on private wells. I was in the State Capitol making a presentation in front of 1,000 live people and closed circuit connections around the State. I helped found and run a corporation to organize all private well owners in the state to stop the government from stealing private water rights.

But the fact is people are lazy and tend to vote party lines if they vote at all. They are afraid to take a stand unless it affects them directly and then they get all indignant about their, so called, rights. It's difficult to get people to do anything for themselves, which makes it difficult to do anything to improve all of our lives.

Many folks don't have a clue about how their government even works. One time they'll vote for somebody who will do nothing and the next time for someone who wants to destroy the system.

The power we have is in the ballot box. Voting is not a guess as to who will win, it's not a chance to deliberately wreck the system, it's not a chance to be vindictive. It's a chance to control our own future, clear out corruption and work together for a greater good. Government is simply a mechanism that allows a community to work together to accomplish something we all need. When it becomes an entity whose main interest is taking care of itself and promoting positions, it is out of control. When people fall for that, they have let it run their lives and allowed themselves to become victims. When they are victims they have no control over their lives and make decisions from anger or ignorance or fear. Elected officials serve at our pleasure. They are only there to do our business as we see fit and can be replaced anytime, but do you see it happening, even with the discontent?

There is a lot of simple psychology involved that goes beyond mentioning here and the masses fall for it hook line and sinker. Much of the time, against their own interests. Experienced politicians know this game well.

Unfortunately, the secretive way government is run makes it easy to dupe the masses and lead them around by their noses. It's the power hungry, the dishonest and the carnival barkers that bubble to the top and get elected. The spin they espouse tricks or plays the voters and another cycle starts.

Then you have someone complaining about the size of a sign, the color of a house, the color of a neighbors skin. The division distracts from the real problems and excites fear. That is when the power is gone. Fear and division are much easier to deal with than a united front. Pay no attention to that war your son is fighting in! Forget that, let's go to the game! Who's your favorite team?

Leaders? Where? I don't see them. I see fear mongers and power hungry egos.
