Thank you both. Slowly, I'm figuring out what to do.

Is looping chains or straps around axles bad?

Well, they scratch, that's for sure so it's bad that way. If tie rods are in the way I would say that's bad as well.
I'm going to go with a clevis in the back with one or two 5/16" chains no scratch there. For the front I'm going to figure out how to hook to the front end weight bracket in a way that doesn't scratch.

Straps don't appear to be acceptable for DOT purposes but that's somewhat confusing and I can find where it's both OK and not OK so I don't know. If you're a farmer in Ohio, you can pretty much do what you want as long as it's not blatantly offensive.

Same for Missouri.

I've seen some pretty amazing stuff here and no one dares say a word, especially the cops. I adhere to the letter and sprit of the law, as best I understand it, and feel like the odd man out.

Classic example here is "Farmer Ted" pulling his big bale trailer with his truck, 8 or 9 bales on the trailer, can't see the tow vehicle from behind at all, no tail lights, no license plate, no problem. See it almost daily. :)

On my Kioti DK45 I run one chain through the draw bar at the back. If I have the brush hog on it runs nicely over the corners of it as well. On the front, I either run a chain through my tow hook under the front frame or I run a chain through the horizontal pipe at the front of my FEL. I use ratchets to tighten.

As long as the straps are in good shape and rated for the weight of the load, NOTHING in ANY DOT rulebook says that you cant use them UNLESS you are hauling crushed cars. Anything else you can use them.

I don't understand why people will drop $5000+ on a trailer but dont want to spend $50 more to put lights on the back... We have wires pre run on both of our haywagons to let you put a set of magnetic lights on the back when they go on the road. The lights also have a 2 pin pass through plug so you can run a amber beacon off of the running lights.

Most trailers here are homemade. The tractors have bale stabbers on the FEL and a stabber on the tractor 3pt. The rear stabber also has a GN ball on top of it. Lights are never added to the trailers and they are pulled on public roads by either the tractor or a truck. Coming from the rear all you can see in the road ahead of you is a haystack moving down the road. They never strap them on either. Real common to see bales in the road ditches or rolled out into a farmer's field. Yesterday I stopped when grading roads and pushed a big bale out of my friend's corn field and into a nearby ditch. Asked him who's bale it was and he said no one claimed it. Had been laying there a couple months. They shelled corn around it.
