Just sand the back side with fine sand paper. Going on the second year since oil change on the 20KW Generac oil is clean and no moisture since I turned off the quite exercise.

I have had some dipsticks that were hard to read, especially in low light situations. I have a piece of blackboard chalk and just put a bit on the stick and then stick it and read it easily. I don't do it all the time and I have never fried an engine. I just always make sure I have oil in them and change the oil out often. The best wrench you can have is clean oil.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
I'm inclined to try darkening the dip stick by heating the end and hopefully improve the contrast between the stick and the oil.

That's what I do; does not have to be heated "red hot'. I use a propane torch and watch for the color change

Paint the dipstick pink, that ought to do it.

Well, I reckon I will sand it a bit, punch some letters and dimples onto it, drill a few little holes, heat and dip it in cool water, then paint'r pink. If'n that don't work, I'll get me some bi-focals. ;-)

If you do all that it will break off while leaving paint in the oil.
Lots of good suggestions. Avoid paint and choose other options in order of least mechanical effect and ease of reversibility if they dont suffice.

Not the least of which is laying the unmodified stick on a clean paper towel.
