What TWO guns would you want more than any other...

I figured in any instances where you could only own 2 guns you'd need the handgun on you for self defence which is why I chose my Springfield in my earlier comment because it holds 21 rounds.

Don't bring a knife to a handgun fight, and don't bring a handgun to a rifle fight.

For self defense over two and four legged critters, I'd take a rifle over a handgun anytime of the day.

If I HAD to choose ONLY two, it would be a 12 gauge for both shot and slugs and then a toss up between a 5.56 or .22LR rifle.

Agreed, but if you didn't know when this fight was going down carrying around your rifle is an unpractical option. I'd rather have 20 shots over 6 in the already unfair match.

For me, a definite is my Marlin 1894 .44 mag lever. It has to be one of the handiest rifles I've ever owned and it easily takes game out to 100 yds with its peep sight and holds 10 rounds. It works for both hunting or self defense.

The second choice is real difficult, but probably a 12 gauge in either a pump or over-under. You can't wingshoot without a shotgun.

12 gauge Mossberg pump, Ruger 10/22 (any variation).

I think my choices if ever our goobermint would allow them would be a FN FAL and a Thompson with the 100 round drum.

Assuming it was a SHTF scenario, the reality is either you have ammo or your don't. Lugging the gun around isn't the issue, hauling the ammo is. My mentality has always been the best offense is a good defense when you aren't the agressor. I'd rather have 30 shots of 5.56 where I feel comfortable with irons out to 200 yards over 9mm or .45 pushing out to no more than 30 yards comfortably for a defensive position. I completely agree with you, hauling a pistol around is a lot easier than hauling a long gun, but with my family, I just don't see us on the move alot with our feet (not because we can't, just that it would seem at this point in time impractical).

That said, the most practical choice IMO would be like gsganger mention... you can't wingshoot without a shotgun (at least I'm not good enough to LOL). Then you have a choice of another long gun IMO. I've always wanted a .44 mag lever, and think that would actually be a good all around choice (for my neck of the woods at least).

However, if I were out west where there are bigger animals, I'd probably go with my 300 win mag or lever 45-70 (over a smaller caliber rifle) along with a scattergun. Around my neck of the woods, most the meat I'm probably going to get is smaller game animals, and I wouldn't want a larger caliber cartridge destroying a good amount of meat, added it would be easier for me to hit small critters with a long gun over a pistol.

However, to each their own. Just trying to explain my logic in what hopefully will never become reality.

Again, this is all hypothetical, so in the end, I'd just like to imagine I win the lotto (hard to do if I don't play, but hey, I guess anything can happen;))

Glock 20 (10mm) and LaRue OBR (AR style) 7.62. Bolt 30-06 would be close, but if I'm carrying 2.

If 3. I'd round it out with a Remington 870
If 4. I'd add a .22Mag bolt action of some sort. For small game.

If I'm after game birds, I'm shooting ducks, geese, and turkey's on the ground. No reason to wing shoot them other than pure legality. I wouldn't waste my time going after smaller birds. The .22 is perfect for that (but I'm not carrying it in this scenario).

I'm taking this 'scenario' as more of a SHTF type situation, in which I would be after big game and simple protection. Neither of these are the best at either, but both cover all instances well.

A .22mag would have MUCH more utility than anything else, so perhaps a Remington 870 and Bolt .22mag would be the best... but not for 'home/SHTF' protection. IMO

I tend to agree with you to some extent; I don't think two guns would cover all of the scenarios that one might encounter. If you had an unlimited supply of ammo, I would probably go with a .22 or .22 mag, lever action and a Winchester Model 12, twelve gauge. My preference would be for a third firearm, a Ruger 357 mag, SS, six inch barrel, revolver for home protection. Even these three leaves open the situation where you need some long distance firepower, although anything under 100 yards would probably be adequately covered by a shotgun slug, and to some extent the .22 mag. unless you were going up against a Marine sniper; and then you're cooked anyway.

I would like to also add a 4th firearm, something like a .308, 30-06 or a .303 bolt action rifle. This scenario doesn't leave much room for favorites; like the S&W K-22, the Ruger MK II, the Winchester model 94 LA 30-30, and the Remington Target Master .22 bolt action. Aw, shucks. Throw in a Remington 1100 and model 11-48...oh, yeah, the little Browning take down .22 semi auto!
