It's kind of interesting that the question was "What TWO guns would you want more than any other..." and the discussion quickly turned to survivalist mode. I didn't take the question that way. I took it to mean what would you WANT, not what would you NEED. Interesting discussion, though.

Interesting choices. The two I use the most are my .30-06 deer rifle. We have a lot of wild hogs, and they are open to hunt year round. They are a pest, and the only thing that kind of keeps them away is shooting as many as possible. The other would by my 357 revolver. I keep snake shot in it most of the time, but I've taken a few hogs with it too when they get to close to the house and that's the closest weapon to me. When mowing, I keep it next to me with the snake shot. It's quick to get to, utterly reliable, and effective at killing snakes.

This is like asking a parent to name his/her favorite child! Anyway, I have several of the guns mentioned and would say that if limited to 2 I would keep the Browning .22 lever (although I also like its semi-auto cousin) and the 20 ga. Remington 870 lightweight.

This is always an interesting conversation.

For the "survivalist" angle of the conversation, I'm thinking my 6" .357 revolver and a .357 lever carbine. Same ammo in both guns, and I can (ideally) up- or down-load power as needed for varying game sizes, anywhere from mouse-fart .38 Special to flaming-hot .357 Magnum. And, as Eddie noted, snake shot is effective as well for small game.

As for what I currently want more than anything ... hmmm, not sure I can narrow it to just two, but I'll try:
S&W 617 10-shot .22LR revolver (6")
Marlin 1894CSS lever action .357 carbine (20")

Also high on the list is a Ruger New Vaquero .357 single action revolver (5.5" stainless)

I guess I took the question to mean what two guns I would want that I couldn't just go out and buy...as I already have all the practical (and some not so practical) firearms that I really want or need...

I don't really want anymore. But the ones think I would keep are a Winchester 270 feather weight pre 64. I was with a my dad when he bought it in 1959. That's my favorite deer and elk rifle. Also a Shilo sharps long rang express in 45/110. Waited for that four years.

But then again I sure do like some of the other ones I have. Like the M1 Garand or the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser.

Maybe I'll have to rethink this.

Don't bring a knife to a handgun fight, and don't bring a handgun to a rifle fight.

For self defense over two and four legged critters, I'd take a rifle over a handgun anytime of the day
”The purpose of a handgun is to help you fight your way to a rifle.”

Not sure whether OP meant from a collector’s standpoint, or to defend the “Rural Redoubt.”

Man, you still don't like snakes....:) Do your snakes tend to hibernate down there or is it a year round concern? We have no venomous snakes here (well, one, but its a rarity). I would like a nice .357 revolver, though. It's pretty versatile.
