I store all my paint spray cans and regular cans in there, with the compressor. Never had one leak, but a spark likely wouldn't set that off. It's not like I store gasoline in there. I have an outside locker for that.

I can't be too careful as we have zero insurance, but the paint in the compressor room doesn't concern me.

flammable paint vapors are just as flammable as gasoline vapors. That's why they print the the warnings on the cans.
To each their own. I have insurance and I wouldn't do it

Thanks for the tips on sound proofing. Its going to be a balance of keeping the noise down.... but not over heating the closet.

if and only if I find a way to keep the closet above freezing the only "chemicals" in there will be latex paints and car cleaning supplies. I have a metal cabinet for solvents and other oil based stuff.

For the piping system I like the idea of running a rough filter after the compressor, and keeping the lines at "tank pressure" and only regulating it at point of use.

Depending on size of your closet, an old school incandescent light bulb can generate enough heat to keep area above freezing.

Rather than insulation use a similar looking batting that is made with shredded rags.
That works very well.
Another trick that I have used is old carpeting that I stapled to the inside surfaces.
Basically it is all about eliminating hard flat surfaces that can 'bounce' sound.
\Also mounting the compressor on fairly hard rubber pads will eliminate vibration generated sound.

I discovered the carpeting idea idea shop that had a reasonably large compressor some 6 ft next to the work station. The simply had a plywood box lined with old carpet. (It was a window and door facility that uses a variety of air tools) Conversation was easy while compressor was running.

I adopted the carpeting idea to shield my water pump in my home. Never even hear the pump!

With sound isolation probably a simple 100 watt incandescent bulb would suffice as a heat source.

my compressor is not very loud, its a 2 stage lower rpm maybe 5300 rpm and puts out 18cfm, its in the corner of the shop, recommend no iron pipe, it takes pressure but does rust inside

pex for lines good just watch pressure, mine puts out 170 in the tank then regulated to 80 for distribution

mine has a drain valve that opens when tank pressure is zero, I only run it when needed, the drain goes to 1/4 copper tube and outside,

my shop is heated in floor and set at 65F I would not think a compressor running at 70F distributing in a shop below zero is a good idea, I would expect condensation to be a big deal in the lines especially if you are pulling the air from outside on cold days

My shop compressor is just a little 1HP 20gal Speedaire. Old school 2-cylinder. Before I finished out my shop, it sat in a corner with poured concrete walls on two sides. Whenever it ran, everybody in the house was VERY aware! To my astonishment, putting up a single layer of 1/4" pegboard over 2x2 furring, down to about 8" above the floor, and on both walls, has quieted it down to the extent that sometimes I have to listen close to see if the "noise" is the compressor.

I never experienced any freezing trouble with my air lines to the house that were buried in the 80s with just a trencher, maybe 18" down. 3/4 or 1" junk economy water tubing. Surprised it never burst! New building, I went down below frost line with 1" tubing rated for 200 psi run through 3" super duct, the 1" pipe pipe bought off craigs list.

progress report

I picked up the air compressor last night, sorry no pictures it was dark, cold and snowy (btw that's Canada from November till May).
I ended up with a Campbell Hausfeld VT6395. Its 60 gallons 3.7 hp, single stage twin piston. Assembled in the US with a 3 year warranty.

It came with oil in it, so I couldn't lay it down. CH should really add 4 holes in the motor/pump bracket to make tying it down a lot easier. But made it home and of course used the L3400 and SSQA pallet forks to unload.

this weekend I'll get a good look at it and start collecting the fitting and parts need for the install.

I used this kit:

Maxline M38 Master Kit, 1/2-Inch x 1-Feet - Air Compressor Accessories - Amazon.com

I think it's a good value as it includes all the fittings and nice air drops that are easy to mount. I have this kit feeding three points in my shop and I am very happy with it. Maxline is the brand name.

How would you compare the Maxline to the Rapidaire System? Their 1/2” x 100’ is half the price of the Maxline.

I was aware of the Rapidaire but, had never seen the Maxline. Thanks for sharing this.
