Back in the 70's when I wanted some small "turnings", I didn't have a lathe... SO, I used my drill press, as I had a decent (still have it) Sears floor model, anyway if some of you want to try turning and don't have a lathe, it can be done with a DP.

Yesterday my helper came over and we cut out/glued up cutting boards as I agree to show him how to make them for Christmas presents, he needs....

is there any good use for those curly wood turnings? Might make a lumpy pillow...
Would sure make a good burn pile fire starter

Fire starters and oil dry is all I've found them useful for. And table saw chips are better oil dry. They're too dusty for a pillow stuffing.

I like making cutting boards. Problem is everyone in my family has one now. I sold quite a few last year but I didn't have time this year. IMG_8162.JPGIMG_8180.JPG

I made actual checker boards a few yards ago. I made them out of 3/8 thick wood and glued it on 1/4 thick plywood so it wouldn't break. Both of them warped awful.

I'd think if you used cabinet grade ply you'd be ok, but if you glued them flat grain I could see that, cutting boards are usually made standing grain (at least I do to protect knife edges), and don't succumb to that tendency to declare their independence!

I think the problem might have been differential expansion. Plywood is extremely stable, because of the perpendicular directions of the grain in the alternate layers. If the fibres in the checkerboard are all orientated the same way, the checkerboard will expand and contract. This leads to the warping.

Had you sandwiched the ply between two layers of checkerboard, the boards probably would have stayed flat. However, the glue might have been likely to fail in the long term.

I like to make my checker boards a bit thicker, and then longer beyond both ends of the checker board. Then I make the boards into stools, so they have more than one use.

Dove tail the legs (ends) on, and sometimes I put a drawer under the top for storing the checkers or chess pieces...

All easy projects that make nice gifts.

That's the best answer I could come up with. It never changed shape once it warped though. I didn't want a thick checker board. I knew a 1/2 inch thick regular wood board wouldn't survive being dropped so the plywood was the solution.

I built a heavy duty 4/4 chess/checkerboard with walnut/maple long ago. Fun project and it turned out great. Wrapped it with Maple border and worried it would expand/contract such that the frame would fail. Nothing fancy other than the frame was detailed with a router to get it a little character. guess I was lucky that the wood was well stabilized prior to glue up because the frame held after years in use. I can't remember what even happened to it after a move. In a box somewhere with the chess pieces (store bought... I'm no whittler ).

It's too cold in my shop! Only 'time' I have been putting in is finding boxes of xmas lights/ornaments, etc. Hunting down and fiddling with extension cords, 3/2 prong adaptors. Oh yeah, been sharpening knives and chisels with my new Tormek sharpener. Next in line will be my axes. They need a little TLC and this sharpener is fun to use.

I built cutting boards that "suffered" from the same problem. There's at least 3 of those boards that are 2 years old that are holding up fine. IMG_7325.JPG

I worked on building a metal roller. I scored some rollers and bearings at an auction. The plan is to hopefully straighten the 1/2x4 barstock that I’ve got lots of. IMG_0891.JPGIMG_0893.JPGIMG_0894.JPG

Do post or start a thread on this endeavor!

I will after it’s farther along. And I bought an already built roller for $35. It’s had better days the scrap monster might eat it.
