Technically we could remove all posts of a banned member but anybody who quoted them would still have those quotes in the messages, which would just create a mess in the discussions that included posts by a banned member.

If you were previously banned, reinstatement is always an eventual possibility which is why we leave the posts and the account on the site.

I'd say 9 out of 10 times somebody asks us to delete an account they are doing so in haste and after a few days reconsider their request. If we were to delete the account and thousands of posts, there would be no way to restore it without shutting the entire site down, merging from a backup, etc, which would literally cost us about $1,000 in fees since we pay by the hour for that type of database work.

Granted, if somebody is really sure that they want to leave and never ever return and are okay with their account being lost, we could change their username to guest and reassign all posts, thereby removing their name/username/signature from the site. But we'd have the rights to keep the content on the site.

Whenever we get a request to remove old content that could be harmful or damaging to a member, we comply with those requests.

Ahhhh, the voice of reason. This was never anything more than a solution in search of a problem.

Yikes...seems like it would pay you to keen up on SQL...it's one of the easiest languages to learn for being so powerful...it's also one of the most unforgiving though...

It's really quite fun manipulating large databases with just a few commands...sort of makes you "feel like god"...:D

As someone with Mod experience we would do the same... if the poster requested something deleted would try to comply or edit... sometimes the thread would be locked...

Deleting entire threads is a worst case with established threads and creates bad feelings for those not involved.

Of course spammers are banned on the spot... almost always new members posting nothing remotely related with links to other sites...

We, as a group are fortunate to have a resource like TBN... learned a lot here and not just about tractors... the politics section is good too... if it gets too much simply unsubscribe.

TBN has also helped me to spend a lot of money...

That's the most important part! :D

Make you "feel like dog" when you screw it up.

I did SQL maintenance for many years.... never messed it up myself. But spent many a night doing bulk outs to new databases, or restores from backup because of others' errors in judgment.

One thing we had to decide when backing up databases is what is your acceptable level of having to redo a bunch of entries VS how much computing power you had to do restores from the transaction log or the entire database, or from tape, in a 24/7 operation.... We were limited in computing power and we were limited in storage space and we were limited in tape backup and restore time and we were limited in our windows to do restores due to 24/7 ops..... it could be a pressure cooker at times. Man, I hated that. Not the pressure cooker part, but the constraints caused by the limited time we had to do things.

why can't a member just be expunged from the register? I have no concern that the the members posts are archived, that is reasonable. I don't think it's reasonable to keep a member captive forever, even as a guest.

I'm missing something. Is there a concern you have that we're not seeing ? :confused3:
