If all these holes aren't to go in within days, I'd rent a 3 PH auger and learn from that. IMO it's little different than buying a cheap semi-beater used tractor at first to learn what'll suit one's work before going all out for new, warranty, cab, heat, AC, Backhoe, MMM, Bose sound ....
I urge keeping it simple and investing less, mostly because like buying a trencher it will likely run out of work and might cost more 'net' to resell vs having rented. (re-selling % loss is often proportional to init cost, so $500 or $1500 goin' in?)
