The way I read the article, there was no slide of earth. It said the operator extended the backhoe, which caused the entire backhoe to slide forward. I read that to mean as he moved the bucket/boom, etc... against the dirt, the entire backhoe(tractor, if you will) slid (moved), causing the outrigger that was raised to pin the other man to the wall(a solid building, not a wall of earth).
