VW pickup?

The world needs another big pickup like we need a hole in the head. Where's another 1995-1999 Tacoma size? Or another one like the Dodge Rampage? Even another one like the original VW pickup with diesel engine?

Screw the regulators. Bring back our small pickups.

That's totally not a "big" pickup. It's built on an SUV chassis. Only thing truck like about it is it's puny bed. :)

I wonder if this VW will pass the state emission standards.

That's it!
I still have my dad's beige 1981 VW 5 spd. diesel pickup with 55,000 miles.
Gets an honest 50 mpg on the highway.
It has been stored since 1990, and is in near showroom condition.
I really need to get it out, put a new battery in it, and list it on E-Bay.
I just can't seem to make myself do it.
Nostalgia maybe?

Unless it's made in the USA we will never see it! Remember the chicken tax that kept many foreign built truck off our soil!

I see a lot of the VW pickups when we go to England, along with the Toyota Hilux, etc.
Nice little mid-sized unit, especially with the diesel. In North America, it’s all about displacement, payload and towing. I’d be fine with a truck the size they “used to be”. I wish there was a domestic market for a compact truck with a small diesel. I don’t need to tow the Queen Mary or carry a ton of rock. I want to go to the dump and the lumberyard every once in a while...maybe tow my fishing boat. Most of the Big Three offerings are super-overkill for what I need. And frankly, I don’t need to compensate.. I’m OK with the size of my manhood.

More for show, doubt would be handy hauling wood or rocks etc. ;)

Mixed feelings on this. I agree that for most of us here they're way too light-duty, but the little "toy" trucks of the 80s-90s did serve a purpose, particularly for suburbanites who didn't really need a "real" truck, but those small trucks did the job for the times they needed to transport a lawn mower to the shop, carry plants home from the garden center, etc....fairly light stuff but too bulky or messy to want to haul in a sedan.

Didn't the old 80s-era VW pickups have some major handling problems being front wheel drive? ISTR that Chrysler made one based on the Plymouth Horizon around the same time.
Then there was the Suburu Brat, as useless a vehicle as there was. What did they have, a 3' bed, maybe even shorter?

Not that I ever heard of. Their main problems were a lack of HP and needing more gears to get up to modern highway speeds.
Our neighbor growing up had a couple that he ran until they rusted apart.

How about putting a battery in it and driving it in local parades or car shows??? I'm sure many people would enjoy seeing it and talking to you about it!!!! Around here the vehicles that get the most attention are original, dents, rust and all.

I didn't realize the size of my manhood had anything to do with having a truck that will pull my GN trailer loaded??

Here in God's Country we call them "grocery getters". :D

Not saying anything other than Detroit and Madison Avenue have pretty much gone the Bigger is Better advertising route with trucks.

I've got a good friend that's a salesman at a multi brand dealership. He says the profit margin is much, much higher on bigger, more expensive trucks. Then add in the fact that there are literally 10s of thousands of big diesel trucks running around this country that never haul or pull a load. The buyer just likes the look/feel. Partly based on the commercials they see on TV (real people not actors). :)

Did they take a Chevy Colorado and put goofy head lights on it? Thumbs down here. And I don't tend to hate on the little pickups. They make a lot more sense than the grocery getters 3/4 tons. That is unless your hauling passengers. The back seat in the compact trucks are awful for full sized people. The back seats in the 4 door fords are like an apartment. I'm generally a Chevy fan, but the Ford cabs have more room.

Most parade goers wouldn't be able to stand the smell of it.

But it would be funny to watch them pointing and discussing what's wrong with it!!!! :D
