Pick up what looks like used to be an old brillion seeder that's now just a cultipacker. Anybody know where I can find replacement hubs and bearings? The rear one in the pic needs replaced.

Found an old parts manual for what looks like matches mine but haven't had any luck finding the parts for sale anywhere. http://landoll.com/Manuals/Brillion.../8C273_SS96-04&120-04_PARTS.pdf?_t=1187886908

Piece of cake. Look up the parts prices online at Messicks and order from them mail order--drop ship. Brillion still has parts for everything and prices are reasonable. Yours are needle bearings so make sure you get them all in. You can hold in place with grease. There will be no problem getting parts and I do it all the time.

That could also have just been made as a packer. It doesn't have to be a seeder and I don't think it was. Brillion used very few different parts and many things from the 1960's are still made today and are maybe 98% the same. They have roller bearings these days. I'll bet you can even buy a roller bearing conversion for your packer. It's expensive, so don't since the needle bearings are fine.

So I think this is the site I need to be on but I have no clue what model my cultipacker is???

Brillion Models Parts Listings

It does have a toothed sprocket on one end of the front drum which led me to believe it used to be a seeder but maybe not.

Also, do you know how many roller rings it is supposed to have on each drum? It seems like each drum might be missing a ring with as much play there is between them.

Brillion has obsoleted many parts both before and after being bought by Landoll. I would expect that style of bearing to be among them. Do try there, I wish you luck.

You just have to fool around on the internet and find one that looks like it. Many--almost all-that look the same are the same. Brillion is unique in that what was made is generally still made and parts are still available because they were used in so many of the same models. Relax.

You have needle bearings that, from a lack of grease, stopped rolling. Then the axles just rode over the bearings that were not turning and wore them out. The rebuild kits come with enough to do the job and you can only fit so many in the hub. Put in what fits tight and that's the right number. You'll see.

Wait--you might be talking about the packer wheels that contact the ground and yes, you could be missing some. Many that look like that are the same and new ones are maybe $85 but used ones can be had for $50-$60. Shipping is an issue because they are heavy. They install by unbolting the axle and sliding them on. No big deal.

Could be but on their basic models a shocking number of parts are interchangeable by virtue of few changes in the models. If I am not mistaken, one needle bearing numbers covers all packers that used them. I've taken a lot of these apart and only recall one number. Sure, new and different models are made but lots still use the same parts. For example, the Brillion "pulvimulcher" of the 1960's is almost exactly the same today, except they are now roller bearings. They make wonderful products and are a fine company.

Ok. My experience as a parts guy for a Brillion dealer isn’t exactly the same. Obsolete is a word often heard when I called to clarify parts availability at Landoll.

With that experience, I defer to you. I only know a few models and not the whole story like you do. I wonder if Landoll stopped making some of the lesser used parts after the merger of the two compnies?

Looking at the pic do you think that bearing housing is shot or do you think I can get by with just the bearing?

Have to take it apart. How much is the housing from Messick's? Can't be that much?

I always took them apart first and then ordered the parts. Brillion is fast and you can call Messics and put on a credit card. Brillion will drop ship to you.

The "bearing" is just a bunch of small round steel pins or "needles". Like extra long u-joint pins.

I have found the bearing but not the housing. Brillion: BEARING, Part # 1C83

What I need to figure out is if I can get by with just the bearing (part no. 9) or will I need the whole housing assembly (part no. 5). According to what I can find on Messicks I can't get the whole assembly but I may be able to get the individual parts. I need to get the thing tore apart to figure all that out.

I remember, the bearings for that are in a cage type arrangement. You can check price and parts manuals online at Messicks just by signing in. Pricing would help you out in making decisions. I like the idea of the whole kit but that's just me since I think you will also need the felt washers. Yours has a lot of slop and you won't know what it's like till you take it apart. Get to the Messicks parts manuals and when you sing in, all the prices are right there.

Do you have any insight as to how to go about getting the right size bearing? I'm pretty sure I know what Brillion part number I need but messicks wan't over $100 for it where if I knew the specs I think I could get an after market for <$15.

It's a pretty strange looking bearing so I don't know other than OEM. I recall trying years ago but not being successful. It's not your typical roller bearing so it will be difficult to match. I think there must be something out there because I have found most common Brillion items to be off the shelf items. Thinking that way it would likely be something common from the 1950's or 1960's. We called them "squirrel cage" bearings so maybe that's a start.

Here's the video where the guy finds an aftermarket bearing.

I cut and pasted the clip and it opened for me
video=youtube;fHxDG52geA0]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fHxDG52geA0[/video

That is a great video and if you can get aftermarket bearings for $13, go for it. The best news is that he gave the bearing diameter so that narrows things down a lot. It never occurred to me to look on youtube.

The bearing number he gave in the video was 1c087

Needle roller and cages start on page 56 http://www.skf.com/binary/30-241905/06003_2-EN-Needle-roller-bearings_Lowres.pdf You need the inner and outer diameters plus width to get an SKF designation number, plug that number into google/ebay and see who will sell it cheapest. For that application, I wouldn't feel bad swapping in a drawn cup needle roller (page 75)
