From Kentucky and smoke houses and "making do" here the Mt. Dew included learning how to get the mash started some called it feeding the hogs.
Maintaining a almost smokeless fire to keep the liquid at proper temperure.
Just joking with you but it was common here until the Feds. wanted the taxes and the juice.
Now no one even mentions using.

Back in the day when I was about 10, Mom, Dad, and I kept observing smoke near dusk. We assumed that a neighbor was burning brush on his property. Then, one evening the Sheriff and a convoy of deputies showed up at the farm. The Sheriff, who knew my Dad, asked permission to cross our farm and Dad gave his OK.

It turned out the tenants on the adjoining farm were operating a still on our property. The next evening, the local newspaper carried a front-page article (with a photo) describing the destruction of a still on the farm belonging to my Dad. He took a lot of ribbing over that.

I recently met a 20 ish year old young man who was completely clueless when it came to changing out an automotive FLAT TIRE ... I was astounded. He didn't have any idea of what to do... for starters, stop driving through the parking lot on the rim, the tire had no air. 3rd flat of that tire in 2 weeks - oh really ? he was Googling "how to change a tire" on his smart phone, while I was giving him detailed instructions and first hand experience. he was lost when it came to locating the tools, placing the jack, loosening the lug nuts etc. it was bad. Glad that I could help - not sure that he comprehended much though.

Man, times have really changed! "In my day" a car was your freedom! A stage of manhood. We lived and breathed cars...Ford vs. Chevy...and prided ourselves on knowing as much about them as possible. I still remember the first '55 Chevy I ever saw; what a thrill!

Hah. Done all of those except the chitlins...head cheese and cracklins, yes,...but no chitlins and no brains (for breakfast that is). I learned early on, when gathering eggs for Grand Ma, that it was best to use the basket and not put them in your overall pockets.

You could probably add "Picking Okra" to that list...itchy, itchy itchy!

Yep. Done the okra thing though we call it Okrey in southern. Pulled corn by hand and dragged a sack to the end of the row and dumped it till a trailer was brought in later to pick up. It's been a lot of years since then, but I miss a portion of it.

Hey TSO,
Gotta diagree with you on the 15 acre idea, That's what my dad had and we small farmed. Old Ford 8N and a JD i forget what model. It had the big pulley on the left side naer the driver seat. WE grew corn, raised hogs in a farrowing house, had cows horsea, raised rabboit for food and two ponds. Hated those hogs, still do. Told dad the only way i wanted to see hog from hereout was on a plate. Miss the cows and horses and ohh chickens. Had a couple of turkeys and some guineas (craziest bird in the fowl kingdom). Back in the day you could wander around other peoples land with no problem as long as you didn't mess anything up or stael something. If you got caught whether it was on purpose or accidental, you got a hefty tail dusting.
