Circular saw and my finger

Yeah I am looking at the portable saws with the folding legs. Cost around $150/200. I bet the visit to the urgent care for the tetanus shot will end up costing at least that much. So likely a good wedding anniversary present from the wife to me. The push sticks will be quite important :)

And always remember that if something feels strange, trust your gut and shut the operation down. One example would be a rip cut where the board wants to come back together beyond the blade (that's known as internal tension and it can lead to some bad things). That took me a while to learn but my instincts are now pretty good.

I bought a really heavy duty table saw from Sears when I was in my early 20's, when I still lived at home with my folks. We used it on projects at my parents' house, then I took it with me when I got married, and used it in remodeling our first home. Then it moved with us to our current home and helped with remodeling that. Nowaday, for the most part, it sits in my garage collecting dust and other projects. But when I do use it, well, I have never regretted that purchase. It'll last me a lifetime.

If I were to buy one today, I'd probably look at a bench-top model to save room in the garage, as this one takes up probably 9-10 square feet of floor space at the legs, and 15 feet of floor space at the table height.

When one of my grandfathers passed away in the mid 80s, I asked grandma if I could buy his heavy duty cast iron table Craftsman table saw. She agreed to sell it to (at almost new prices, but was getting memories also). We used it on the house we had at them, really wanted a chop saw, but did not have funds. We finished up all the projects (finished basement, added attached garage, put 6' cedar fence around the back yard, etc). It was constantly in the way it seemed and when a co worker was looking for a table saw for his wife's craft business, we made a deal and he got a really nice saw. that was over 30 years ago, when I talked to him a few months ago (wanting to buy saw back if he still had it), yes, he still had it and his wife uses it several times a week. It is the center piece in their garage along with a band saw.

Yeah I am usually good about that. Obviously not this time. Went out and finished the job last night. No issues of course.

Saw Stop table saws have been on the market for several years, and "yes" if you don't know how to use a table saw "safely", they will help you out when you do something stupid.

OP, I did exactly the same thing when I was in my 20's. Felt a nick on left ring finger. Looked down. Little flap of skin and one drop of blood. I took that as a warning and never did it again.

SR, I've had a Delta contractor's saw for over 30 years. Got it with the unisaw style fence and extension table. Stays tuned up perfectly. Perfect dead-on cuts every time. Getting that fence was pricey at the time but one of the best choices I ever made.

Mine had more vibration than I could accept and sometimes I needed it to stay spot on from morning to night. I just got tired of not trusting it any longer...

Because everyone knows that knowing how to do something safely and actually doing it that way every time for a lifetime is exactly the same thing.

Do you wear chainsaw chaps? If so, is it because you don't KNOW how to use a chainsaw safely? How about PTO guards? Because you don't KNOW how to use your implements safely? Maybe you fold down your ROPS because, obviously, you KNOW how to drive your tractor without tipping it over!

Honestly, Rob, I'm surprised at your attitude. As someone who makes a living doing dangerous things, I would think you would have a different attitude regarding engineered safety features on dangerous tools.

Maybe it's best to be safe AND knowledgeable.

If I ever need to replace my current cabinet table saw it will be with with Saw-stop technology. I can't do my job will out my both my hands. Without my job I can't provide for my family. Simple as that.

Table saw injuries are just incredibly common and unlike lots of other "work place" injuries having lots of experience doesn't reduce the risk all that much. It actually kinda surprising.

Have seen the Saw Stop at several home and garden shows. I'm told that they tried to license the technology to the big saw manufacturers but couldn't reach a deal. So they started to make their own table saws. They are a bit more expensive but there is no doubt in my mind I would get one if in the market for a table saw.

I know how to use an electrical outlet pretty well but I'm still glad I have the GFCI around the pool and bathtub.
