Quick Hitches Need a quality quick hitch

Best thing I see to do with a HF QH is to remove the bolts holding rhe top hook in place and buy removable pins that fit in their place.Al

I had to drill out the holes slightly since the HF bolts are metric but I bought 2 of these 1/2" trailer receiver pins. Paid about $6 each but they work great and it's just a pin, no extra clips.

Do any of you with Cat 1 QH's besides the HF one know what the max working load limit is of your hitch?

Are PTO extenders really safe? I read where some break and have and can cause serious damage. One fellow mentioned the thin, thin housings on modern tractors and how the extenders add stress to gears and such. I think the cost of a proper fitted shaft length is smart and not all that expensive when looking at the possibilities of damage potential. Maybe on old equipment that is built much tougher than these compact tractors seem to be, the extender is ok.

Instead of messing with two Hair pins, I made a pin that is like a safty pin like in times gone by held dipers on the baby.

It goes thru both pins I am thinking of makeing a D to weld on the pins, so I can pull both pins at once.

Safe? For personal safety I would (and do) have the extender at the tractor end of the PTO shaft. So you don't have the whole shaft flailing around if the adapter should break. But are there really credible accounts of anything breaking a tractor's PTO output?

Only PTO shafts I have heard of breaking are the smaller ones put in the old N series Fords.

I like your big clip idea. I carry spare R clips for those pins - after setting a clip temporarily on top of the QH then losing it in tall weeds. More than once.

I don't trust that all pairs of holes up and down the top of the QH are exactly the same distance apart or even in the same vertical line. And the pins are a snug fit. So welding something that holds the two pins a precise fixed distance apart, might be more of a frustration-maker than a convenience.

I went to the hardware store and bought a package of two magnets, about 1x2x0.5, and set one on each side of the top flat of the quick hitch. No more lost pins. It will even hold the big pins, not just the locking pins.

Found a better picture of pins and clips.

There's also a barely-visible plastic toolbox cobbled on back there for various 3-point accessories. I should weld on a metal ammo can to replace it.

This photo also shows the devices I welded up that keep the trailer ball on the cross-drawbar from swinging down. A piece of flat stock is welded to (removable) cat-1 to cat-2 sleeves at each end. Then bolts instead of clips at the ends. I intended this as temporary but they have stood up to pulling a 2600 lb watering trailer all over this steep orchard for several years now so there's no need to replace them with the store-bought bracket that is made for the purpose. In fact I doubt that bracket could be used with a QH.
