Stay out of NM because its not very nice here. Especially where I am.... way too remote for most.

I am always skeptical of those lists. In about 1992 Money magazine listed Prescott, AZ, as the best place in the country to retire. It appears a large number of folks listened and moved there. The traffic quickly became a mess. The population of the area has grown tremendously and the water supply has become a serious issue, tho it appears most folks ignore that.

Anywhere would be a great place for me to retire in 2018, but I'm only 56, still got a few years with the Telephone Company, hopefully.

Thanks Eddie. Arkansas is good and the weather is way above average in the Ozarks. And if your from a news paper and have a Yankee accent. there is considerable joking and tall tales to shock there senses. example Worst sight to see is a U-Haul trailer behind a Northern license on a car.

Texas is almost 1st. cousin status. so many have moved in .

Like they say, "Yankees are like hemorrhoids...a pain in the *** when they come down, but we're happy when they go back up".

NM is fine for some folks; I lived in Albuquerque three years and hated it. Was happy to get back to Oklahoma. My brother lived there (Albuquerque/Corrales) over 50 years until his death.

It's all a matter of perspective. Maine is listed at #47 for weather, Florida is #2, edged out by Hawaii. I guess they don't consider things like hurricanes when they do the numbers.

You literally couldn't pay me to live in Florida... Mosquito's the size of a Robin, snakes up the yazoo, and, oh yeah... Gators. No thanks... Not to mention, it's hotter than the hinges on the gates of h3ll...

I'm disappointed, Mississippi usually ranks 48 or worst in most things, and here they rated it #10! Maybe because Cost of living? I've got to admit though, coming from Vermont and Northern Virginia that Mississippi ain't got no kultur :)

Yep, even pigs choose to live in the sty.

That's funny, around here the first chance they get they run out and go wild.

These lists of the best and worst come up quite often. And often as not I have to wonder, has the writer ever been in some of these states in the winter? Or even set foot into more than one locale?

Or, the ratings on health, obesity and/or health care? My "adopted" state for the last ten years, KY, usually rates low in all of the above mentioned areas. I consider the doctors that my wife and I use to be excellent. As for obesity, that may just be a personal choice and not the state's fault? Do excellent pork dishes and/or buffet tables mean that the state is at fault?
<snip>
Obesity may be a "local" problem. The Walmarts in Mississippi are often frequented by women so obese only one can fit in an aisle, they are wider than the shopping cart. That doesn't mean us retirees have to try and meet their standards.

And as far as Health care - My BIL is a Doctor with a family practice and other relatives are Dentists. So with relations like that basic health care is take care of.

It's funny as much as I hear people complaining about California, that it's not #50. I grew up in Maryland and thought I would go back after I got out of the Navy. Just ended up staying here. Will have to tell my parents how bad Maryland ranked. LoL

While I don't have a lot of experience in Arkansas, I'm shocked that it's number 46. I know a lot of people that have moved from Texas to there, and from what I've seen, they found a really great state to live in. Most are in the mountains, but a few are in the Southern part of the state near the Mississippi River, which is really nice too. If I sell my place, Arkansas is near the top of my list of places to consider moving to.

Hi Eddie, I spent 6 mos. living in Ar. near the mountains. I cannot tell you how much I liked it! I met some of the best people anywhere, and even though I had to return to NY, We still text each other all the time. Those people are my family now!

There are definite cultural differences, but that's what makes it special. Medical is a big minus, they are many years behind what we consider modern. That particular area is just getting some local quality internet, otherwise, most don't need or want it.

I am hesitant to retire there, as the 911, and medical services are way behind, but other than that, it's a paradise!
